Argument in favor

Congress’s foremost constitutional duty to provide for the national defense. While this bipartisan bill is a compromise, it will strengthen the military at a time when global threats are increasing and funding is hard to come by.

While it is easy for those of us on the Left to decry military spending, it is one of the major functions of the Federal Government. While the spending may be too high, it is hard to gauge if we do not have a serious National Defense Plan, and we haven't had one sense Reagan was President. The Defense Department, and the relevant Congressional Committees, need to craft such a plan, and then fund it.

I fully support and recommend passage of this bill as written. Even with the previous two defense bills our military is far from rebuilt. 8 years of poor defense spending under the military hating Obama where even training, spare parts were difficult to get to have full plane squadrons capable of doing sorties it will take more too get our Armed Forces to the level they were just prior to the first Gulf War enabling us to be victorious against Saddam and liberate Kuwait. #MAGA

Argument opposed

The U.S. shouldn’t be spending $750 billion on national defense, an amount significantly outpacing America’s most significant rivals. A smaller military would free up funding for other priorities.

Just outrageous. DOD has a blank check. Where is the outrage from the budget hawks? Where are the fiscally conservative Republicans? I don’t want my tax money paying for more war! Cut it in half!!!

Oh my gosh I have to stop laughing. No absolutely no. Here’s my compromise. You may have every bit for the raises and housing, benefits, death benefits, VA benefits, care housing and research and any other things our vets may need, training for our troops and any already approved construction projects with no possibility of that money being allocated anywhere else, simple maintenance, a defense budget that matches the least of the top nine country’s defense budget, no nuclear weapons, no ships, no short or long range weapons ( we just sell them anyway) and no helicopters. Oh and no physical wall. See I saved you billions that can go to our debt and safety net programs and paying back SS, perhaps some infrastructure...

    During a recent interview, Jimmy Carter was asked how the Chinese economy was able to grow so much is the past thirty years. He answered that question with this question; "How many military conflicts/wars have they engaged in over the past thirty years? The point is that military conflict/war has long term costs humanitarily and economically. War power should not vest with the executive branch; conscientious oversight is needed to ensure that any conflict we engage in is both righteous and worth the cost.

    It is not just national defense that this bill supports. It is international defense. We have been supporting other countries since WWII. It is time for us to cut back on never ending wars in areas where there is no hope of an end. Stop interfering in other countries political strife.

    A budget of this size is not about defense. Instead, it’s about maintaining the wealth and power of a few on the backs of the many. Eisenhower warned us about the dangers of the military-industrial complex. His advice has been ignored and we now have a military whose cost is bloated beyond all reality, with little to show for it except ongoing, endless wars. Cut the military budget by half and we’ll still have a very well funded military.

    Defense from who? We're the aggressors. Shouldn't it be attack spending for oil and other resources?

    The U.S. shouldn’t be spending $750 billion on national defense, an amount significantly outpacing America’s most significant rivals. A smaller military would free up funding for other priorities.
