senate Bill S. 1772

Should Employers Have to Change Workers’ Schedules Unless They Have a Good Reason Not To?

Argument in favor

Working families need to have flexibility in their work schedules when they have medical emergencies, or to accommodate their educational aspirations or their second job.

If you support family values, then it seems reasonable to support families. If you want people with families to work & not depend on the government, then it seems reasonable to make it possible for them to work. If you support rigging the economy so it isn't possible to raise a family unless BOTH parents work, then it seems reasonable to create a work climate in which parents have schedules that are predictable so children can be cared for. I am aware that most Florida legislators think family values means having the option to have sex with your female staff while the wife & kids are safely tucked in at home, but normal citizens need to work. Pass this! A NOTE ON THE CON ARGUMENT: if you don't think sticking you government hands into my vagina is intrusive, why would you think THIS is somehow beyond the pale?

Workers have found their quality of life steadily eroding for 2 decades now, while the wealthy keep gobbling up more of the capital goodies. It's time to hit reverse

Within reason employers should be able to allow schedule changes for a family emergency or illness. In my business I allow employees to use annual or sick leave. If they haven't any I allow them to borrow from future leave accumulation. It creates good will and loyalty.

Argument opposed

This legislation would be extremely intrusive for business owners and require them to accommodate employee’s scheduling request unless they can show a good reason not to. It may cause employers to reduce the number of workers they have.

Damn straight. This bill is designed to limit freedom and promote more government control.

The Feds have no business regulating what individual businesses can and can't do.

No no no! If you don't like your schedule and your employer is unable to accommodate your wishes, find another job. It is absolutely NOT the governments job to force an employer to comply crazy requests like this. America is not a Socialist country. If you want oppressive regulations like this, move to France.

All work schedules can be made for thirty days in advance. If it needs to change for any reason, employees filling in for those vacancies should be compensated for the change in schedules. They should receive two times their wages for the inconvenience to fill the gap in schedules.

Is there not any part of the private sector that you do not want to control? Go back to the Kremlin -- uh, D.C., and leave us alone!

I'm an engineer and was fired because my employer wouldn't allow to work a few hours earlier. Businesses treat employees as disposable and more action needs to be taken against that.

With collective bargaining power at an all time low, and qualified domestic workers sitting on the bench due to outsourcing to child and slave labor happy countries, state and federal government from this point forward need to protect labor from management. Accommodation to favor work-life balance, is pro-Family, pro-Life and is the least management should be compelled to do - along with required payment of a living wage, paid sick and maternity leave - financed in whole by creation of another tax bracket for the billionaire class.

This essentially expands Reasonable Accommodation for a very specific and limited number of cases, it DOES NOT force employers to accommodate every employee for every request and make changes to scheduling that would create undue hardship to said employer. Nor does it do anything that would support any argument that employers could be forced to lay workers off or hire fewer workers due to hardships- arguments that are common election season hot-buttons and make no sense whatsoever in this case.

Most good employers will do this in the aforementioned circumstances in the reason to support this. Absolutely wrong to force a business in this fashion.

WOW! What an outrage! The government is turning into a true dictatorship... The Feds don't have the power to do this... If this passes it'll be illegal in my eyes.

Salaried employees generally are given flexibility to accommodate personal responsibilities. If we want loyalty and higher productivity out of our hourly employees, we need to offer them the Sam flexibility. We no longer live in a 9-5 world.

Government does not belong in the private exchange of employer/employee relations. If I do not like my job I can look for another.
