senate Bill S. 1494

Should Congress Close Asylum Loopholes & Change Rules Regarding the Detention of Children?

Argument in favor

This bill would reform and improve broken immigration laws related to asylum and the detention of children who enter the country illegally. It would require asylum applications to be made in Central America or Mexico, making it unnecessary for migrants to enter the U.S. illegally.

This bill would be a HUGE step in the right direction. There is no possible reason for opposing this legislation. This is exactly what we need to fix the crisis on our border. It protects true asylum seekers and children, while closing the damaging loopholes. It deals with the massive backlog and addresses the actual causes of the immigration crisis. To my Senators and Congressman: PLEASE support this and make it Law. The American People are sick of nothing being done to fix this problem. Get. It. Done.

Argument opposed

While this bill may include worthwhile provisions to address the influx of unaccompanied minor children and migrant families crossing the border, it isn’t a broad enough solution to the problems facing U.S. immigration policy.

Absolutely not. Refugees should not be required to apply for asylum in other countries first, we should not be increasing detention time for children, nor should we be granting DHS sole oversight on the conditions migrants are to be kept in. And that was just from reading the first few lines of the summary. Changes to the immigration system need to be made in bills separate from the ones dealing with the current crisis on the border. These are not difficult problems to solve, but they are if everyone treats them like a political football.

Seeking asylum is a human right that requires due process to ensure that no one is sent back to be persecuted, a violation of domestic and international law.

Seeking asylum is legal, and children belong in fully funded schools with their parents and/or guardians, not jails. It’s white nationalists, who are domestic terrorists, who belong in jails.

Life is dangerous for asylum seekers in their home countries, with criminal gangs. The president’s decision to cut foreign aid has made these countries even more dangerous, making it more likely for citizens of these countries to flee their homes. I can't help but wonder if the president wants these asylum seekers to flood the border to force public opinion in favor of his wall project. If so, he once again has played his base exceptionally well. Regardless, the bill should also include addressing the dire needs in these countries so their citizens feel safe enough to stay. Anything less us not comprehensive enough.

What bothers me the most of this Bill is the Following Statement " The Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) would have sole discretion to determine standards for detention related to migrant children, and states would be prohibited from requiring that immigrant family detention centers be licensed by states. " Something is wrong with this picture. Scary!

Every child should be treated with great care, respect and dignity! When here, they need something as good as foster care gives. If their parents do not want to be separated from them, then they need to stay home.

This is why you always have to read the fine print. Lindsey Graham sponsored this bill. So, of course, it’s not good for immigrant children. It actually extends the time they can be detained from 20 days to 100 days. Please vote no.

Not only should we change, we should make it clear that Human Trafficking will not be tolerated. We must improve the conditions of our detention facilities, make them organized, sanitary and safe. While paper work is getting organized and filled, have medical staff and humanitarian aid ready to help and educate those American hopefuls to embrace, love and add to American values of democracy, economic capitalism, and the English Language.

People have the right to apply for asylum in the USA. The people coming here are under duress to say the least. They are not criminals.

Just by looking at this picture makes me want to cry. All of these children's are humans no matter what and should not be treated like animals in a pen. Do they even teach them anything while they're in those camps such as English or writing or math?

A lot of these requirements are too broad that asylum seekers could be taken advantage of. If we want to fix the immigration problem, this is not the way. Something else we can do: open our borders. Opening our borders would create a tremendous amount of economic opportunity between countries. It would allow asylum seekers to spend on passports and travel expenses rather than VISAS, or worse, coyotes. If we are so worried, having them travel here legally would allow us the opportunity to track criminal activity! As it stands, we cannot since they are illegal. It does not make sense to make things harder on them, it is to the benefit of all countries to open their borders, the people who have these ideas are thriving from tourism and consumerism. Let’s at least consider it.

I was illegally taken and separated from my siblings here in the US, by a crooked Welfare system. Yes, it is horrible, however several of the children have been found to have no family relationship to the person who brought them across the border. Child trafficking has become an issue.
