senate Bill S. 1357

A Short-Term Extension for the PATRIOT Act (Unchanged)

Argument in favor

A short-term reauthorization is better than letting the security provisions of the PATRIOT Act lapse, and it will give the Senate about two months to come up with reform legislation that can pass.

We need to be safe. We need to fight the terrorists. Yes perhaps some parts to the Patriot Act should be amended. I like the Freedom Act. I would rather be tapped then blown up.

Argument opposed

There is other legislation that would preserve some aspects of the PATRIOT Act while banning the bulk collection of Americans’ data without a warrant. Pass that bill, or let the bulk collection provision expire.

The Patriot Act was far from patriotic. It was an illegal violation of American privacy and a dishonorable slap in the face to every citizen. These actions are deplorable.

The Patriot Act is an overreach of governmental authority and should be allowed to expire. It raises the risk of government abuse more than it lowers the risk of a terror attack.

Absolutely not, the Patriot Act is one of the greatest attacks on our civil liberties that must be rescinded immediately. If we give an inch now, if history proves correct these laws will be used for more common day appearances. Think of the Rico laws that were used against organized crime in the 1930's, they're used all the time now in regular law cases that have flimsy connections to the original intent.

Absolutely not, are you kidding?! This reeks of incompetence and deception. "Uh, yeah, we need more time to think of some excuse to feed the American people as to why we should be allowed to continue to trample on their rights as citizens." If there was a legitimate reason to renew it, that reason would already be known and under consideration. Patriot Act supporters have simply been caught flat footed and weren't expecting to have to justify this breach of human rights.

Just say "NO!" to RINO Mitch McConnell's bill and vote for Sensenbrenner's bill, H.R. 2048, instead! "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." -- Benjamin Franklin https://en.m.wikiquote.org/wiki/Benjamin_Franklin BTW, how many of you recall the news about all of that cocaine that was found on one of the ships that's owned by Mitch's wife's family in 2014?! It was found by Colombian authorities, if I remember correctly. . . . See: http://freedomoutpost.com/90-pounds-cocaine-seized-aboard-ship-owned-mitch-mcconnells-family/

The government can't make you safe. Being a healthy, fit, individual with knowledge of self-defense techniques can keep you safe in most situations. Life is inherently dangerous. The government isn't here to protect you, they're here to abuse power at every opportunity. Stop giving them opportunities!

Let's face it, bulk data collection will continue whether it's legal or not. We should at least try to maintain a small fragment of our privacy rights.
