Post-Brexit: Does the U.S. Need to Reaffirm Its Special Relationship With Great Britain?

Great Britain is one of America’s oldest allies, and in the wake of the British people’s decision to leave the European Union it would be wise for Congress to reaffirm the Special Relationship between the two countries and call for negotiations over a trade agreement.

While the U.S. values all of its alliance partners, it needs to place special weight on Britain for the simple reason that exceptionally close alliances are exceptionally valuable and difficult to replace.

Argument opposed
The U.S. and Great Britain will always have a Special Relationship, Congress doesn’t need to reaffirm that. Calling for negotiations over a trade deal between the two countries may be premature at this stage, and besides, this resolution isn’t even binding.

This bill congratulates the United Kingdom on leaving the European Union. Patting the U.K on the back for leaving the E.U sets a bad precedent and could have negative diplomatic consequences, while the economic benefits of a trade agreement with the U.K. are debatable.

Looking for a problem in this question, such as when did the US stop supporting the British? Oh sure, there are a few Obama supporters in Britain - Cameron or Blair who didn't want Brexit. But by-in-large, we stand shoulder to shoulder with the British people. We fought wars together and have remained strong supporters of NATO. NO solution is need because there is no problem.

As my friend Center Wing said, "England knows we have their back through thick or thin, this is a waste of time. ". The only thing that I would add, is that so long as Britain doesn't oppose us. We have already fought them twice and won both times, we've only gotten better at fighting since then. Otherwise, I like them as allies.
What is the purpose of this legislation exactly? Isn't this the presidents job? This strikes me as pointless.

It's like being a child in a divorce. Britain will always be our parent, regardless of their relationship with Europe. This bill is a complete waste of time and money. If this congressman wants to affirm our relationship with Britain, send a card or pick up the phone. How about spending more time on laws that will help the citizens of this country?
This is for the executive branch not the legislative branch.
Another waste of time. And we need to deal with our own terrible election results before trying to make Britain feel better about theirs.
Waste of time legislation. The Brits made their choice, they don't need to be coddled.
There's no teeth in it--being a resolution--however, it provides some (if only very minuscule) political pressure on the Congress to not succumb to the protectionist policies advocated for by the incoming Trump administration; especially with such a key economic and geopolitical partner such as the United Kingdom.
There are more important matters that legislation needs to focus on.
Standing by your friends is a good policy between nations as well as people.
