The US can certainly express concern for freedom of speech but the best way to influence others is to practice it at home! Not hearing witness testimony in the Senate when it had been volunteered from a 1st hand witness is not exactly the way to promote free speech.

I think this is a fine statement of our beliefs as a country. I think it lacks credibility as does any of our belief's until our leadership walks their talk and leads by example instead of by our rhetoric. Until we can fix our problems at home, it is hard to imagine that any other country will take our statement of values very seriously. Still it is nice to list them so that we might live up to them once again in the future.

Argument opposed

While it may be bipartisan, this resolution is non-binding and wouldn’t make any tangible policy changes that would punish the Iranian regime’s crackdown on protests or support the people’s right to protest.

Stay out of Iran’s freedom of anything. With this President in office, we can’t even say we have freedom of speech or freedom to protest. This president has no American values at all. We should not comment on other governments.

What is House Bill H. Res. 752?

This resolution would express support for the Iranian people’s rights to free expression and condemn the regime’s crackdown on legitimate protests. It would express the House’s solidarity with the Iranian people; condemn the regime’s human rights abuses — including the killings of at least 208 protesters and the arrests of over 7,000; call on all democratic governments to support the Iranian people’s right to live in a free society; demand that the regime respect its obligations in respecting human rights and freedoms of assembly, speech, and press. Additionally, the resolution would call on the administration and companies to take steps to support the Iranian people’s ability to freely express themselves using technology, and for the international community to ensure that human rights violations are part of all multilateral & bilateral discussions with Iran.

As a simple resolution, this legislation is non-binding and wouldn’t advance beyond the House if passed.

In-Depth: Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL) introduced this resolution to support the Iranian people’s peaceful and legitimate protests against the regime and condemn the regime’s oppression:

“As Iranians from across the country take to the streets to protest their oppressive government, they are met with violence and live fire by Iranian authorities leading to the deaths of hundreds of innocent people. The Iranian regime has an infamous reputation for egregious human rights abuses against its own people, including by censoring the internet, restricting both religious freedom and political participation, imprisoning journalists, and torturing political dissidents. Congress stands with the Iranian people. The Iranian government must end its violent suppression of the protests and respect the Iranian people’s right to live in a free society.”

Original cosponsor Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) added:

“With this resolution, Congress is sending the strong, bipartisan message to the people of Iran that we support their democratic aspirations and will do everything in our power to hold this regime accountable for its deliberate human rights violations. I am grateful to my colleague Chairman Ted Deutch for introducing this important measure and working together on behalf of freedom and democracy for the people of Iran. The United States must always stand with the people of Iran in their struggle for liberty.”

This resolution passed the House Foreign Affairs Committee by unanimous consent and has the support of 30 bipartisan cosponsors, including 18 Democrats & 12 Republicans.

    Let's correct the assaults on Freedom of the Press, human rights and dignity, and the Authoritarianism present in our own country before telling anyone else what to do. As things stand now we haven't the moral high ground to tell anyone anything. Shameful but true.

    We, as a country which is becoming a dictatorship, should NOT be commenting on the actions of other countries’ treatment of protesters especially when the Trump administration is starting to clamp down on the press ie not allowing reporters from CNN & NPR go on trips or be in briefings, that’s the start of a dictatorship where reporters aren’t allowed to to speak the truth to power thus being the same as Iran. When we get back to being the leader of the world instead of a 3rd world country we are under Trump, then we can comment on other countries’ activities.

    It's just a resolution, this means nothing. Sure, sign it. The US claims to stand for democratic principles everywhere, this is a free way to make it known without putting any real investment into it. Sort of like how we actually support democratic principles and protest rights stateside, right, Lakota tribe XL pipeline protesters? (Obligatory /s for the Senators)

    While I agree that Iran’s crackdown on dissidents should be condemned, please let’s not be hypocrites. We have a Senate trial going on right now where Republicans do not want to allow witnesses to to testify!! Either actions are deplorable!

    Why should we keep on poking Iran in the eye while remaining huge hypocrites by never addressing our “allies” abuses that are much worse! I’m referring to Saudi Arabia, UAE and Bahrain or for that matter the abuse of Palestinians at the hands of Israelis such as Benjamin Netanyahu?!!! How about all the assassinations of unarmed Palestinians protesting at the at the Gaza border fence!? Haven’t seen any suggestions about bringing that up as a point of contention?!!!
