It is crucial that we recognize that America is not a nation for only white Christians, but a nation of all people and all faiths.

We are a culturally diverse nation, once touted to every American schoolchild as the "melting pot" which implied immigrants coming to this country gave up their culture to become American. But our culture is great because of its diversity. We need to recognize the contributions of all ethnicities.

I recognize the cultural significance of Lunar New Year, but am lost on this vote. By recognition, what does this entail? National holiday or it's just added to all of the calendars we buy each year? It is my belief that while we should recognize specific holidays as national holidays (i.e. Fourth of July, New Years, Presidents' Day) there should be a 3-5 day allowance for personally observed holidays allotted to you by your employer for religious or secular holidays. Not everybody needs or wants Christmas off, but if you do, take it. Perhaps instead of Christmas, you want days off for a family reunion in the summer, take your holiday. Easter, Lunar New Year, Ramadan, Halloween, first-day-of-spring; you pick your holidays that aren't represented by the country as a whole.

America is a mixture of all different faiths and beliefs. This makes up who we are as a country, and without it a piece of us is lost. Cultural exposure is necessary to open mindedness and equality. 新年快乐！

If we are to honor one kind of New Year, it is only respectful to honor all kinds of New Year.
