Reaffirming America’s Commitment to the NATO Alliance’s Collective Defense

Argument in favor

As a leader within NATO, the U.S. should reaffirm its commitment to the alliance’s collective defense to ensure that there is no confusion about America’s willingness to defend its allies.

Our freedom as a country relies on our relationships with our allies. This not only includes those in NATO but all those nations we have treatises with and trade agreements. We need these countries with us. Although the US may have the "largest" military in the world we do not have the strongest. China has reached parity and will exceed US spending, advancement and maintenance of force in the next few years. It sounds good to hear that we have the biggest and best but listen to some of the testimony on the government channels. We are in deep trouble and it's because we keep cutting taxes for corporations and the rich. Bottom line look to the Republican agenda. It doesn't work except for them. But back to NATO, since our enemies have reached parity, what would happen to the US if the other NATO countries decided to wait it out if we were attacked? They could you know and while we on that the "ONLY" time that Article 5 has been used "IS" in defense of the US on 9/11! Should we reassure NATO that we will stand by them? Absolutely!

We are of this world. We are not separate from it. WW 2 taught us that. That's why NATO exists. We do not stand alone. We are the wealthiest and most powerful nation on earth and we need to support those countries which need us. Who came out for US after 9/11. NATO. Don't screw around with this. It's far too important and Trump is an idiot to think we would never need them. Korea and Russia are no longer light years away. They are sitting in our backyard in today's powerful war machines.

Argument opposed

The U.S. should only honor its obligations to defend NATO allies under the treaty’s Article 5 if those members are meeting their defense spending commitment.

The US should renegotiate every commitment under the leadership of Trump's administration. After all the changes this administration are bringing about, I trust them more than any previous administration in my lifetime of 37 years. Americans first, MAGA!!!

It's one thing to have mutual defense agreements with allies. To do that does not require NATO membership. NATO requires funding and forces even in peacetime and was a defense against the USSR. It is completely unnecessary to be part of NATO. I don't suggest we turn our back on our allies. I do suggest we abandon the burden and expense of NATO.

We need to stand with our allies. Trust among the NATO nations is critical. This alliance has worked well since WWII and needs to continue. To think in this age of international dependence we can stand alone is absurd!

Unlike Trump's noncommittal position at first which is due to his ignorance of the subject matter, we need more than ever to affirm our support for Europe in the face of Russian aggression and hostility.

Of course. With more issues that will take international cooperation, it is important to stand by our commitments to our allies.

No matter how trump had painted it, NATO has been good for America, and the world. We must stay with it, and be better allies than we have been in the past 6 months.

NATO members are long standing allies who have stood by us not only monetarily (though I was embrassed by this administration's focus on that aspect of this alliance) and by sending their sons & daughters to be along side us -- many losing their lives. You cannot and should never put a $ amount on the sacrifices of these members as well as our own young men and women. NATO should remain strong and we need to stand firmly with it.

I've personally served alongside NATO troops while in the army. I've seen the good that's being done. Keep up the good fight. The UN, however, is a different story. Time to jump off that train wreck.
