Should There Be A National Voting Rights Day?

Argument in favor

Designating August 6 as National Voting Rights Day is a helpful way of remembering the importance of voting rights and the sacrifices of those who’ve worked to support them.

Make voting fun. Make it easy. Remove barriers. It works! Research shows! http://www.civicyouth.org/quick-facts/youth-voting/

I don't know how this isn't already a holiday. To those that complain about taxes or we should read the constitution I say this, do you actually know what the he'll you're talking about or are you most likely just regurgitating the same bull crap that the Koch brothers funded pundits tell you to think. Think for yourself and you'll realize how much you think is real is actually just big pile of bull crap.

Argument opposed

All this resolution does is say that Congress thinks it'd be a good idea to have a National Voting Rights Day, it doesn't establish one. Even if it created such a day, it's unclear that anyone would care.

Maybe we should have a "Read the Constitution Day". People might better understand what's right and what's wrong with America.

OMG. You do not have far more important things to do? WE ARE 18 TRILLION IN DEBT! Why don't you spend this time cutting spending to not only balance the budget, but actually run a surplus to start paying down the debt. WE NEED TO STOP PUTTING THIS DANGEROUS DEBT BURDEN ON OUR KIDS AND GRAND KIDS!

Much better to turn Election Day itself into a national holiday so more people are able to vote than waste time on this hypocritical excuse of a holiday.

Voting used to be treated as a national right and as a public duty, it should be treated the same as jury duty. This will force not only politicians and the political parties, but also the media, to educate the public. Our republic is only as strong as an informed and engaged electorate. Making it easier for everyone to vote will go a long way to strengthening our Union.

Voter registration is once again becoming an issue as attempts to reduce ballot fraud have disproportionately affected America's lower classes.

How about a tax liberation day instead? To tell us the day in the middle now of the fiscal year when Caesar's cut has finally been rendered, and we begin earning for ourselves instead of for the welfare queens. By that I mean those who wanna remain anonymous without identification as they show up with 110% of their slum community neighbors to cast their unanimous vote for the sugar daddy.

There should be an entire week to voting. If not a national holiday.

This doesn't establish the holiday, it just says there should be one, and that's a step in the right direction.

We should spend our efforts making sure everyone has the right to vote. Too many states have passed laws for the express purpose of denying groups of people this right.

There should be a national holiday for, about & to encourage participation in America's electoral process. Voting & the rights we possess as American citizens are slowly being eroded (or outright taken in some places) and concentrated into a very select few simply because a large percentage of Americans do not have the necessary information to properly exercise & defend their (voting) rights. A National Voting Rights Day, held the day before national elections, would foster a more informed population, reduce voter/voting fraud by involving more Americans in elections, further providing inspiration both at home & abroad and, hopefully, leading to a refinement of our election processes to more accurately reflect a true democracy (instead of a democratic republic) of United States.
