house Bill H. Res. 1162

Should the House Condemn Russia’s Seizure of Ukrainian Ships & Crews?

Argument in favor

Passing this resolution, while non-binding, would demonstrate to Russia the nipartisan unity of the U.S. House of Representatives when it comes to Ukraine’s independence and security, hopefully discouraging future Russian provocations in the region.

Russia’s act of aggression must be condemned! This is a power grab reminiscent of Hitler in preWWII. We ignore this at our peril.

That’s an act of war, unless it was by non-state actors (Russian contractors in green suits with no markings), and then it is piracy.

Argument opposed

If Congress really wants to do something to deter future Russian aggression against Ukraine, it should provide more security assistance to the Ukrainian military or impose heavier sanctions on Russia’s leaders, not pass non-binding “statement” resolutions.

Ukraine is led by oligarchs who literally take the money collected for taxes and keep it in their own pockets. Warlords are hindering the progress of this country and using their private armies for private gain, and not just a simple money gain. If anything, this NATO partner should never be allowed into the alliance partnership; therefore, I will never support Ukraine so long as they continue to bankrupt their own country through stealing money from their people. President Putin sees this and is using rèal politics to take advantage of the situation, just as the United States does. So no, we cannot condemn Russia for seizing the Ukrainian boats when we do the very same thing.

Wouldn’t it be better if we could lead the world and call upon our allies to join us in an international condemnation of Russia’s aggression. Sadly, we don’t lead anymore, we have a diminished number of allies, and we don’t stand against Russia’s aggression.

Condemn and place sanctions on Russia not just because of Ukraine, but because of election interference too.

Of course we should do this. Plus we should impose more sanctions on Russia until they leave The Crimea, and withdraw their troops from Ukraine. This is s no brainer! I am tired of Trump pussyfooting around on the Russians. They are not friends with the US and Putin plays Trump like a violin.
