house Bill H. Res. 1154

Should the House Condemn QAnon and Reject the Conspiracy Theories it Promotes?

Argument in favor

The conspiracies promoted by the QAnon movement are undermining public trust in America’s institutions, are beginning to grow more prominent in political discourse, and in some cases have inspired violent plots by followers. The House should go on record as condemning QAnon and the conspiracy theories it promotes.

YES, YES, YES. Our country needs to address the issue of willful disinformation distribution and dissemination. We have too many flat_earthers convinced by disinformation sites. The fact that QAnon and mass media outlets provide such a powerful basis for foreign influence means that we have to rethink aspects of how to diminish their impact. Russians have for years been working to disrupt western democracies with disinformation - with the intent of presenting so many ‘alternative’ facts and false narratives that the public becomes divided and has difficulty sorting fact from fiction. In our media-centric society, we are increasingly dominated by sound bites and news snippets instead of our own deeper thought processes to tie the nuggets of truth together- that is what the Russians and other foreign adversaries can exploit to disrupt our society. QAnon, other ‘deep-state conspiracy’ and even our own president provides platforms from which our adversaries can find ways to divide us. … … … Somehow, and this is a difficult problem to address, the distinction between ‘freedom of speech’ and ‘freedom to lie and mislead’ needs to be sorted out. The pace of of information flow in today’s world allows a simple lie steeped in circular logic to rapidly spread into a firestorm of lies and there is no ‘fire department’ available to keep the spread of wild-ass disinformation under control. This is why the Russian (and other) disinformation campaigns are so effective in disrupting western democracies. Further, there have been examples of otherwise normal people being so misled by QAnon conspiracies that they chose armed confrontation of supposed wrong doers to ‘save our children’. Willfull disinformation has consequences that our society will have to find some way to suppress while preserving the right of free speech to have opinions based on facts and plausible conjecture.

They should resolve to condemn Q’Anon and any other source that spews unfounded conspiracy theories and censure anyone in politics citing this as a factual news source; this includes the president.

UPDATED 10-9-20: Study done by Center for Strategic & International Studies found that far-right terrorism accounts for 2/3rds of incidents and has outpaced far-left & Islamic State and Al-Qaeda inspired terrorism between 1994 and 2019. UPDATE 10-6-20: while the legislation lacks teeth FaceBook is banning all Qanon pages, posts & accounts. Need more than condemnation of Qanon as it’s really harming many people and endangering the US. Social media is taking action against accounts & posts but there needs to be some legal teeth as well perhaps slander and/or fraud since people are using it to build for profit internet followings. It should also be declared domestic terrorism along with white supremacy group because then organizations can purge people belonging to these groups (especially police, military, politicians, etc). There is even the possibility of connection with Russian Counter-terrorism. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-qanon-russia/russian-backed-organizations-amplifying-qanon-conspiracy-theories-researchers-say-idUSKBN25K13T https://www.csis.org/analysis/escalating-terrorism-problem-united-states http://www.homelandsecuritynewswire.com/dr20200827-qanon-s-growing-threat-to-the-november-election-and-to-democratic-processes-worldwide https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ryanmac/facebook-bans-qanon

Argument opposed

While it may be well-intended, the House passing a non-binding resolution to condemn QAnon probably won’t have a meaningful impact in tamping down the movement’s conspiracy theories. It could also have the opposite of its intended effect by raising awareness of QAnon and driving more followers to it.

Once again, another feel good resolution which does nothing. The Democrats waste their time passing a resolution, but refuse to acknowledge and/or handle the actual violence in their cities. Go figure.

While the intentions may be good, isn't this opening the door for infringing on freedom of speech? I see the mainstream media and press put out misinformation or partial truths all the time. Long gone are the days where the facts are reported, you see more and more certain items are highlighted to sway public opinion. Are we going to publicly reject them as well? Let's spend our time and energy dealing with the real issues, put more effort into bringing our communities together instead of dividing them.

The house and the tabloid news make up crazy conspiracy theories daily. I condemn them. QANON is justified in their pursuit to level the playing field with their own conspiracy theories. As long as there's a cnn, there must be a QANON for balance. Laugh all you want about the ridiculous conspiracies, its the same way I laugh at you when you talk about Trump being a wanna be dictator in cahoots with Russians. If you're right about that, then you truely are pedophilic lizard aliens. The two conspiracies have the same plausibility. Look at the 'nut jobs' rioting, looting, murdering based on cnn lies. You're okay with that? Hypocrites...

Hell yes!!! These are the violent nut jobs showing up at peaceful protests and causing the violence because they believe QAnon conspiracy theories. Until this dumpster fire I never truly knew just how many gullible people there are out there. I worked with the public for years and used to say "just when you think you've seen and or heard it all someone does or says something else". Every single day! But this QAnon takes it all to the extreme level. They push their conspiracy theories on the gullible. It's that simple! Yes the House, Senate, the president especially and the rest of this administration need to put their big boy pants on and condemn this group and also charge their leader or leaders with domestic terrorism. Why? Because they cause the panic and anger to the gullible which endangers the public as we've seen for years now. All this violence! Who lives in a city or town and wants to destroy it!?! Seriously! As folks with brain cells we know what's reality and what's not.

Absolutely the Congress, DNC, RNC and anyone one with half a synapse working should condemn these conspiracy theories and those who proliferate them. We have more than enough real conspiracies going on. We don’t need more unproven, non-scientific, SciFy mean spirited crap out there. Stop reporting on them. Stop giving credence to them. Condemn them.

It is groups spreading conspiracy theories and lies like QAnon that are dividing and ruining our country. FOX News is doing the same thing, not to mention, the POTUS! We will never come together as a country as long as these lies go unchecked and the truth is not made loud and clear.

This QAnon conspiracy is both dangerous and undermining our government with its misinformation and destruction of public confidence. I believe that QAnon is a hate group, if not domestic terrorism, and we must do all we can to protect free speech but suppress the spread of theories like this. If we had a competent president, he might speak against this movement and protect us all, but this one won't. Every day I see believers in this theory say wild, hateful things about Democrats that are completely untrue, and it's only a matter of time before another pizza shop gets attacked, or worse. Congress must do all it can to investigate and undermine this group.

“The true definition of a snob is one who craves for what separates men rather than for what unites them.” ― John Buchan ...... I have now realized just how many people in our country have superiority complexes.....they are the ones who actually believe they are better than other people. They have different reasons too. Without listing all of them, the common theme seems to be that they would feel like NOTHING if they didn't feel above another person or group of people. What's hard to believe is that some of those people who think they are above others are also being conceived by the others as below them. I think the true issue is personal self-esteem. Perhaps if every person added up all their good qualities and subtracted their bad ones, and then compared notes -- the results would show equality ... and then if they have a problem with being proven equal, they would benefit from some serious psychotherapy.

Condemn QAnon and reject the conspiracy theories only? How about the president as well? QAnon has no source of facts and the location of Q has been trace to Thailand, not some one in the federal government. People that follow Q propaganda are being duped! I listen to some of these people they need stronger tin foil!
