house Bill H. Res. 1145

Should the House Condemn the Poisoning of Russian Opposition Leader Alexei Navalny?

Argument in favor

The poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, which was likely orchestrated by Russian government officials, is an abhorrent act that the House of Representatives should formally condemn. This resolution all emphasizes the need for transparent investigations into Navalny’s poisoning, and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

Yes, they should condemn Putin’s use of nerve agents to take out his opposition. There is little meat to this, but it is a statement of principle. On this topic, Putin will not want the trump to ‘tattle’ on how or why he has managed to gain such influence over the trump beyond his appealing to the trump’s narcissistic ego. There sure appears that there is more ‘there’ there. If I were the Trump, I would avoid buying tea in airports after January 20th. Those tiny doses of the Russian Novichok nerve agent seem to be very effective in silencing those who would challenge or expose Putin. Perhaps the NY prosecutors should put the trump in protective custody for a few years so he can avoid crowds where a blow gun and a Novichok pellet could protect Putin from having the basis for his overwhelming influence over the trump exposed.

Argument opposed

The U.S. government already did some of what this bill suggests in terms of condemning the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and pressing for transparent investigations. This legislation is non-binding and doesn’t require any action from the federal government.

I still have a hard time understanding the logic to these feel good resolutions that are non-committal. I really hope that Congress doesn't believe that Russia gives a shit what they feel or think.

I really think the House should be focusing on this country. If you want to condemn someone, look at our President who brushed off thousands of innocent infected COVID people. Let’s clean up our own issues before you take on more than you can handle.

Symbolic at best since Russia & Senate Republicans are the only ones that have not congratulated President Elect Biden, and will Moscow Mitch bring it to the Senate floor?

All of them detriment to this country all of them out for their selves and screw anybody else. The whole lot is enough to make me vomit on my shoes.

We must continue to speak out against injustice and human rights violations throughout the world. Russia has not had free and fair elections in decades, which has kept Putin in power. Navalny was thought to be the best chance of a challenger to Putin in the last two elections, but it's clear that Putin intends to keep finding ways to keep him from being a threat. We must speak out against the poisoning of political opponents and efforts to keep the Russian people from being able to have a choice for their leader. And we also must speak up because if it's ok for Putin to do this...who's next?

Representatives, Support House Bill H. Res. 1145. Condemn the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Call for a full and transparent investigation. Demand a robust response from the United States Government and the international community. The poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was a heinous act. The House of Representatives must formally condemn it. This resolution emphasizes the need for *transparent investigations* into Navalny’s poisoning and to bring the perpetrators to justice. This resolution would also strongly encourage the State Dept. and Treasury Dept. to use their authority under the Magnitsky Act to sanction individuals involved with the poisoning of Navalny as perpetrators, organizers, or masterminds; and express support.

Are we really asking this question? Poisoning = bad. I think if we poll a room of four year olds after a screening of Snow White we would get the appropriate response:)

Trump will not condemn Russia for trying to poison anybody and the republicans do not want to offend Trump, so that leaves it up to the democratic! Trump fires anyone that shows he is wrong or tells the truth! Trump doing a scorched earth policy, as he leaves office, out of revenge for not winning. What interesting is trump base support this? His policy from day one has been the destruction of the United States. Revenge is his mode of operation with winners and losers, work great as a business, but not in government, justice system or police department. You do not government to pick winners and losers, but be equal and fair.
