Europe has it, and it doesn't seem to hurt them. FMLA didn't go far enough, and this bill should include a sizable amount of paid maternity leave.

It has been proven time and time again that paid sick leave is a very good thing for the work and helps businesses prosper; a sick employee forced to work because he needs the money hinders their entire work force because they will infect their fellow employees who in turn will stunt growth and productivity for the business.
Argument opposed
Paid sick leave and similar mandates place an unfair burden on businesses, forcing them to sacrifice productivity and sales, which could lead to job losses and business closures.

My vote of NAY doesn't mean that I'm against employees getting paid sick leave! What it means is that I don't believe that government has any business forcing companies to provide it! My goodness! We appear to have spawned a generation that
1. wants everything GIVEN to them;
2. doesn't object to being DEPENDENT upon whatever goodies government feels like doling out;
3. is incapable of DOING anything, much less THINKING, for themselves without Big Brother holding their hand and giving them permission;
4. has totally been brainwashed into accepting socialist/communist LIES as "gospel"!
Aren't any of them paying attention to what's happening in VENEZUELA 🇻🇪?! Do you really believe that that couldn't happen HERE?!
It's so IRONIC that the "progressive" liberals are calling President Trump a dictator! They don't seem to have a CLUE about what life is like under a REAL dictator! They are so drunk on the Kool-Aid swill of SOCIALIST PROPAGANDA that they can't even see straight, much less think about the IMPLICATIONS of demanding that Big Brother solve all their problems for them!
TURNING OVER CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE TO BIG BROTHER IS OUTRIGHT SLAVERY! And even if the slaveholder takes good care of you, YOU ARE STILL NOT A FREE PERSON! Being FREE requires maturity, self-control, wisdom, and responsibility, and it comes with risk, and often hardship, and sometimes sacrifice. But do you really want to be a SLAVE?! SO MANY AMERICANS HAVE WILLINGLY SHED THEIR BLOOD, EVEN GIVEN THEIR LIVES, SO THAT WE COULD BE A FREE PEOPLE! Don't let their sacrifices be in vain!
If you want paid sick leave, either find an employer who offers it OR learn how to NEGOTIATE to get your employer to provide it!

Government should stay out of the private sector as much as possible. This could place undue stress on new businesses. Many may not have official sick leave but look the other way when employees are sick. Government stay out.

This is an awful idea. The government has done enough harm to voluntary labor contracts as it is.

Before I retired where ever I worked in the private sector you had a choice to make. Salary or hourly. A salaried employee received fixed weekly or bi-weekly pay, vacation based on time employed and one week personal/sick time per year. Hourly received higher unit per hour but no vacation, holidays, or sick time, you were paid for your hours. This system works, is fair and should be applied to all workers in particular local, state, and federal employees of which quite a few abuse the benefits they get! And everyone should be accountable for their performance and poor performance resulting in termination of employment. Protectionism of employees has to be restricted!
The businesses should only be required to pay sick leave to an individual if it can be proven that the business or corporation itself caused the employees illness. Other than that, paid sick leave should be optional to the employer. Sure, you don't know when you will get sick, that's not your fault; but it's not the employers fault either. Don't punish employers for something that is not their responsibility.
This is 100% up to the employer. This is a great way to get have companies go out of business due to abuse.
Leave the private sector out of this. Yet another federal mandate in the works.
If you're not productive for your business, that business has no obligation to pay you.
If people are forced to choose between income and wellness, circumstances may force them to go to work even when contagious. This does nobody any favors: the sick person, their coworkers, or anyone they may come into contact with (during a commute or if working with the public).
Let the business determine what it offers and stop the bully tactics and the cost increases this mandate would create.
This is for individual employers and employees to decide. This is no place for politicians and government bureaucrats.
We have a democratic Republic, rooted in capitalism. The marketplace, and the individual companies/corporations should have the responsibility/authority to do or not do.
It's a novel concept these days that people should actually perform a service to get a benefit.
