If You're on the "Do Not Call" Registry, Should you be Safe from Political Robocalls?

Argument in favor

Pre-recorded political phone calls should be subject to the same rules as all other telemarketing calls. If a person bothered to sign up for the Do Not Call Registry they probably don’t want robocalls from political candidates or interest groups.

Argument opposed

Political content, whether it comes from a candidate running for office or an interest group, shouldn’t be restricted as robocalls can help mobilize voters who may not have turned out to vote without receiving a reminder call.

While I agree that the list should cover unsolicited messages about political campaigns, I recently received a call that influences my thinking on this. Without any prior registration, my senator robo-called me to include me on a teleconferenced town-hall. I could hang up if I wished. This was one of the most inclusionary things I think a public servant could do, and it is therefore important to me to maintain its efficacy, which means keeping its user base large. I hope to see more behaviors like this and fewer of the common prerecorded messages.

I added my name to the "do not call list" to protect myself from aggressive capitalism, not to be shielded from my constitutional right to vote. I live in a state where the majority would prefer I not know about an upcoming election so they can stay in power. Voter suppression is high and I will not block yet another medium used to fight against it.

    I hate Robo calls, and I recommend anybody who has an iPhone to download Truecaller. It really helps with the spam

    Non-partisan "get out the vote" calls are fine, but partisan robo calls should not be allowed.

    Always wondered how politicians didn't understand what a "Do Not Call List" meant too them. And while I expect no Calls, what about those mailers? In my house, it's a quick trip from mailbox to recycle ♻️. I would like to compost them, but to many toxic colors.

    Do not call means DO NOT CALL. A telephone call is an unwanted interruption. Unless you are someone I know well I have no interest in being interrupted at YOUR convenience.

    Plus, beef up the existing do not call "laws" by adding enforceable consequences for violating them. I already receive numerous unsolicited calls all day and into the night!

    I do think legitimate calls from legislators or those legitimately on the ballot can be allowed to educate and mobilize the populace. And we all know an educated populace that gets the people out to vote is the bane of Republicans.
