Should The U.S. Award Malala Yousafzai A Congressional Gold Medal?

Argument in favor

The U.S. should show formal support for courageous young activists like Malala; her bravery against inequality in education will be an inspiration to young women in the U.S. She deserves this honor.

If congress is not going to work on governance here, this is at least a worthwhile distraction.

Malala has done more than enough to deserve this honor.

This young woman is not only a hero but an influential Muslim voice. In honoring her, the US would show honor to all non-violent people who stand up against the injustices in their societies. This would not only be a good thing, it would counter the argument that we have so successfully spread that the United States is at war with all Muslims instead of only those who are terrorists. Unless, of course, there is no one left in the US Congress with a functioning brain & you want to confirm that we are a society that opposes everyone who is not white & Christian.

Argument opposed

Malala recently received a Nobel Peace Prize for her work; awarding her a Congressional Gold Medal seems unnecessary and ignores the others who deserve it.

Honor our war veterans before foreigners. I get that she's influential in other areas, but she hasn't really done anything for the American people besides inspiration.

Congressional gold medal should be for US citizens. Great that she has started what she has but there are other issues citizens have tackled.

I have huge admiration for this young lady, but believe congress should give its gold medals to US citizens.
