Should a Working Group to Prevent Fraud Related to the COVID-19 Pandemic be Established?

Argument in favor

Attempts to defraud consumers during the COVID-19 pandemic are alarmingly common. Given the depth of the economic crisis the pandemic has plunged many households into, it’s especially important to protect Americans from fraudsters at this moment. The working group that this bill establishes would play an important role in keeping American consumers, and their wallets, safe during these uncertain times.

Yes, a group to monitor fraud would be of benefit. We already have the very high profile Mr. Pillow guy try to secure funding for a mystery cure involving toxic plants. He claimed there was incredible results and in-depth studies yet could not produce any. Then there was the hydroxychloroquine debacle pushed by two first-aid station doctors and simultaneously by FOX pundits bringing in an expert to talk about the incredible 100% effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine used in Stanford Medical studies in which he was involved. The FOX Idiots promoted this and the trump picked it up as the next magical cure and purchased millions of doses for the national stockpile (while ignoring the dire need for PPE). Stanford said of the expert ‘Who Dat’ and reported they used hydroxychloroquine in three critical cases and two survived - apparently the fake ‘expert’ did not count the one person who died. Stanford drew no conclusions - and I believe I have seen that very same ‘expert’ on FOX pushIng other nonsense, and FOX dies not seem to care. The point is that scared and desperate people can be defrauded and expose themselves to really awful results by for example, actually drinking bleach ‘cause the trump suggested it. So, yes watch out for the fraudsters - protect the people and reduce the incessant phone traffic of people to defraud us calling from dummy phone numbers.

Yes there should be a Covid-19 Pandemic Fraud Group but no trumplicans are allowed. This should have no connections to them at all. We need honesty and they don't know what that is.

Argument opposed

This bill is unnecessary because existing federal agencies, including the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Securities and Exchange Commission, and Federal Trade Commission (FTC), are already doing an excellent job of protecting customers during the pandemic. The FTC is providing advice on its website regarding avoiding COVID-19 scams for both consumers and businesses, while the SEC is suspending stocks and the CFPB is tracking complaints related to COVID-19 scams.

A man walks into a bar and orders a Russian Collusion. 2 1/2 years later the bartender gives the man an empty glass and a bill for $32 million. Sounds about like what we could expect from the same partisan witch hunters.

What is House Bill H.R. 6735?

This bill, known as the COVID-19 Fraud Prevention Act, would establish the Consumer and Investor Fraud Working Group to prevent fraud during the COVID-19 pandemic. The working group would report monthly regarding resources available to consumers, public enforcement actions, and related consumer complaints.

Impact

Consumers; consumer protection against COVID-19 scams; the working group; and relevant federal agencies.

Cost of House Bill H.R. 6735

A CBO cost estimate for this bill is unavailable.

More Information

In-DepthSponsoring Rep. Cindy Axne (D-IA) introduced this bill to protect Americans against scams intended to take advantage of them during the COVID-19 pandemic:

“In uncertain times, many families and individuals can be unsure where to turn and what information to trust – and unfortunately not everyone will have Iowans’ best interests at heart. Any and all malicious attempts to mislead or rip off Iowans, some of whom may already be in dire financial situations, must be fought with every resource we have available. With this legislation, we can protect Americans and guard our families and communities from deception or financial ruin.”

Of NoteThe Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has issued more than 40 suspensions for stocks believed to have inaccurate or unreliable information in connection with COVID-19. Additionally, from April to March 2020 alone, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) received over 53,000 consumer complaints, including reports of attempted collection of debts not owed and false statements, in connection with COVID-19.

To help consumers protect themselves, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) provides advice on its website to help consumers and businesses protect themselves from various common COVID-19 scams.

I'm concerned about fraudsters during these troubled times. Yes, these agencies may be tracking such claims, but the federal agencies are almost all underfunded and understaffed after 4 years of a president who doesn't care about anything other than judicial appointments and lining his own pockets. We must be sure Congress has a hand in protecting people.

Y E S! Fraud prevention in regard to Covid-19 pandemic is WAY OVERDUE. This, going forward, would mean that Trump would be totally muzzled & kept from speaking about Covid, period. Apparently Dr. Deborah Birx, who is now considering resigning from Coronavirus task force agrees, due to the unhealthy influence of recently-installed Dr. Atlas ( radiologist, Trump enabler, faux-scientist).

It's a little late, don't you think? This was apparent from the very beginning when the WH was putting together two lists. One for donors and one for non donors then granting contracts to people who were donors. And lets not forget the famous, they are from Blue states and they are going to hurt...that's their problem. Today, we had the second, second, count them, second, change to the CDC website that changes position on the transmission on COVID-19. I am absolutely outraged by the damn stupidity of this administration. This flip flopping back and forth just demonstrates how career professional are being badgered by political sycophants lining up to make Trump happy and cover up for greatest failure in American history, not just as a president but also as a human being.. This vacillation is causing deaths and is fooling no one with any scientific or healthcare background. You are deliberately feeding false information to American people and contributing to infection and death of American people. Enough is enough. I am not asking the three damn fools that represent Tennessee. I am appealing to someone in an educated state to take action now. This issue needs to be addressed now through whatever action needs to happen to arrest this stupidity that has taken over our government. I don't want to hear anything about well vote, donate money, its only 42 days, etc, etc. These acts are deliberate and is going to set our infection and death rate on a collision course that we can't be turned back. You need to ask yourself, just how much damage and death are we supposed to sustain between now January 20th. There is one thing I do know. There are going to be a lot of people who are going to blame both parties if a stop is not put to this. I as is most Americans at this time are sick and tired of hearing there is nothing that can be done. If this is what our politicians can get away with, then we are in more drastic need of changing more than just the idiot in the WH.
