Sanctuary Campuses: Should Colleges That Don’t Comply With Immigration Law Not Get Federal Funding?

Argument in favor

Colleges and universities that refuse to comply with immigration law should have their federal funding for student loans and grants cut off. If the people who live in that state support that policy, they can pick up that tab.

Noncompliance or outright refusal to comply with federal immigration law is, most definitely, grounds for denial of federal funding. Immigration is one of the few areas where it's the federal government's business to be involved.

Seriously, why should people who pay taxes be paying for students who do not pay taxes? The colleges should be held accountable to help make space to educate those who are citizens. If colleges cannot comply then they should not receive funding.

Argument opposed

It would be incredibly spiteful to deny institutions of higher education access to loans that enable more students to further themselves academically simply because the school doesn’t want to help deport unauthorized immigrants.

It is not the school's job to deport Illegal Immigrants. That being said… the wording on this is pretty difficult to figure out.

Undocumented students and their families pay taxes to support higher education in the U.S. Furthermore, it's the university's job to educate, not to act as a police force. There's already a precedent of universities maintaining their own police so that they can selectively shield their students from city/state law enforcement in the interest of the campus climate and education. Lastly, research on sanctuary cities shows that it can improve overall citizen safety because when faced with possible deportation, undocumented citizens will not report crimes to the police or aid with investigations. If they do not have this fear, they are able to work with the police in good faith. This is similar to how some colleges have amnesty policies with regard to alcohol consumption. In order to keep students safe, if students seek help for alcohol poisoning, they are not prosecuted for underage drinking or public intoxication.

Campuses are places for higher learning, not policing based on quite arbitrary attempts to scapegoat a subset of people.

Despite what they may think they are, they are not above the law and should be fined for non-compliance as well!

This progressive liberal philosophy of I don't have to obey laws that I don't like is being pushed by Democratic politicians purely for votes and political ends and by completely out of touch liberals and snowflakes on college campuses who have no idea what the real world is like. We are a republic founded on respect for the rule of law and you don't get to pick and choose which ones you will follow and which ones you will ignore because you don't like them. That's called breaking the law and you get charged criminally for doing so. If a college or university is receiving public funds then they must be required to obey the rules of law.

Sanctuary colleges, like sanctuary cities, are breaking the law and MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE! The open borders advocates like to refer to our nation's invaders as "undocumented immigrants." These people are in fact ILLEGAL ALIENS, who have no respect for our laws or our national sovereignty. Therefore, the cities AND COLLEGES that claim to provide those illegal aliens with sanctuary ARE IN FACT AIDING AND ABETTING CRIMINALS! I don't understand why liberals won't uphold their country's laws! If you believe a law is unjust, the RIGHT thing to do is to work to get the law changed or repealed. HONORABLE, LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS DON'T TRY TO CHANGE THE LAW BY BREAKING THE LAW! The Democommie liberals are demonstrating their disdain, not only for the Rule of Law, but also for God Almighty! Sanctuary cities and colleges are but symptoms of their perverted moral standards. Remember, most of them are the same people who justify the murder of innocent unborn children, and who refuse to obey God's teachings regarding marriage! God has said that SIN IS LAWLESSNESS: “Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.” ‭‭(I John‬ ‭3:4‬ ‭NKJV‬‬) “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.” ‭‭(Romans‬ ‭13:1-4‬ ‭NKJV‬‬) “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.” ‭‭(Titus‬ ‭2:11-14‬ ‭NKJV‬‬) IF WE ARE TO INDEED BE A NATION OF LAWS, WE MUST UPHOLD THOSE LAWS OR USE LEGAL MEANS TO CHANGE THEM! UNFORTUNATELY, OUR OWN CONGRESS HAS FAILED TO HOLD OUR OWN POTUS AND PAST AND PRESENT MEMBERS OF HIS ADMINISTRATION ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR LAWLESSNESS! WE THE PEOPLE MUST HOLD OUR REPRESENTATIVES ACCOUNTABLE FOR NOT DOING THEIR DUTY AND FOR NOT HONORING THEIR OATH OF OFFICE! IF WE ARE TO BE PLEASING TO OUR CREATOR, WE MUST BE A LAW-ABIDING PEOPLE, AND WE MUST MAKE CERTAIN THAT OUR LAWS DO NOT CONFLICT WITH GOD'S LAWS!

No ONE has a right to be here unless you are born in America or you come here legally. "Sanctuaries" are doing the equivalent of what the Segregationist Democrats did when they tried to ignore Federal Law and stop Black Americans from going to public schools. Disgusting.

Our Federal Government uses our own Tax Dollars to force their will on States daily. This would be normal operating procedure, and applauded, but aiming it against liberal institutions, strangely, becomes controversial. Just do it. No institution, City, State, Company, or individual should receive Our Tax Dollars while refusing to follow our laws.

Most undocumented immigrants pay taxes, and many of them are trying to become citizens but are failed by the system. Also, most of them are required to sign up for the draft. Look it up. So most behave like citizens and should be treated like them, and a school that welcomes them should not be penalized.

It is not the job of an institution of higher learning to deport illegal immigrants. Moreover, the "sanctuary campus" campaign is not for illegal immigrants per se; it is for REFUGEES -- people who feel unsafe and need sanctuary, need refuge. This seems to be another project of defunding social welfare programs.

The liberals are so fond of the law unless it goes against their ideas, then not. So no they should not get funding if they're breaking the law.

Absolutely!!! We are a nation of laws and everyone should have to obey those laws...not pick and choose what to obey and not obey depending on what you want to. If they don't follow the law pull all funding...very easy solution

Universities seem to be the only place where people are educated enough to understand immigrants are not the issue in our nation. They should be allowed to protect those that they posses the education to reason are victims of an oppressive system, not a cause of economic or public danger.
