house Bill H.R. 646

Should Congressional Pay Raises be Blocked if the Federal Government Runs a Budget Deficit?

Argument in favor

Members of Congress get paid to keep the nation’s fiscal house in order, and if the government is running a deficit then lawmakers shouldn’t get a pay raise.

Members of Congress get paid to keep the nation’s fiscal house in order, and if the government is running a deficit then lawmakers shouldn’t get a pay raise. Not to mention they make OVER $174000 per yer. Far more than their average constituents make. It's time to cut the congressional free ride with big salaries and health care far beyond what the average person receives.

You work for me and my family. I don't ever remember voting to give anyone in congress a raise in pay. What gives you the right to vote yourself a raise? No right at all. Your job is to SERVE. Your job description is service not selfishness. By all means, Link future wage increases to a balanced budget.

Why on earth should we give pay raises when they aren't doing a good job?

Argument opposed

If members of Congress are due a pay raise under the laws they had enacted they should receive it rather than having it blocked because the government ran a deficit.

This is a very simplistic bill that doesn't seem to understand that the government is not a business and shouldn't be run like one. The bill also appears to lack understanding of how fiscal policy works. Some years the government will run a deficit and it will be necessary given underlying economic conditions. Members of Congress should not be denied pay raises just because the government is running a deficit which can be a very good thing when the economy is weak and the government spending has to make up for a lack of private economic activity.

No. Although we may not think they are doing their jobs, we put them there. We voted for these clowns so whose the fools? They took the job with the understanding that they would be paid and get raises and now it's up to their employers to live up to our side of the bargain. If you don't think that your employees are preforming up to your expectations, pay more attention next time you vote! Rather just voting for a party vote for the person best able to do the job.

No. The federal budget is much more complicated than such facile solutions can address. There are economic conditions where the government SHOULD overspend. This Republican should sit down and learn to govern. It's hard, and can't be encompassed by popular slogans such as this.

Yes, definitely. I support incentivizing Congress to balance our budget and not keep putting things on the national credit card.

Not only should raises be blocked, benefits and salary should be capped at half of years served in office. Being a representative was supposed to be a part time affair while continuing to still operate your personal businesses. Congressional recesses are based on when members needed to return to their farms. So they should be like everyone else and return to the workforce after leaving a job rather than being a gigantic tax fund vampire for the rest of their life.

They work for the people. If the elected officials cannot be fiscally responsible, then they don't deserve a raise.

Being a leader means making hard decisions. Our country is vulnerable if we are not fiscally independent. Congress is in charge of the budget. Members of Congress should ensure that a budget is balanced, and that it is adhered to. Be a leader, ensure that U.S. remains a great nation, and help our country get a balanced budget! Pay raises should absolutely be prohibited for members of Congress if the government ran a deficit the previous year.

If the government shuts down, Senators and Representatives should not be rewarded for not doing their jobs. They ran for office. They volunteered to represent the people. If they cannot work together and move government forward they should not get a pay increase, especially when people on Social Security would stop getting their payments.

In theory I don't agree with this concept, but I also don't feel congress is doing their job. I want term limits for congress.

Should have happened a ling time ago. We're paying 75% of every congresspersons deductible and copay because they said they couldn't afford it - why would we give them a pay increase for doing nothing but frustrating the citizenry.
