house Bill H.R. 6168

Raising the Cost-of-Living Compensation Rates for Veterans and Their Survivors

Argument in favor

While it doesn’t establish automatic cost-of-living increases, this bipartisan bill does provide a boost to the benefits received by veterans and their families for another year.

Cost of Living increases for disabled veterans are necessary, and honestly should be automatic...not a one time hit, as this bill proposes. If you can’t support your veterans, then stop sending our men & women to war!!!

Argument opposed

There’s no need to increase cost-of-living adjustments for veterans’ benefits based on the percentage used to boost Social Security benefits.

Not until SSI has also an increased cost of living benefit as well.

Much needed! Consider including healthcare workers & 1st responders in this Bill. @Robert: Healthcare workers & 1st responders are on the frontlines of the Covid-19 war and deserve the same benefits if sick for long periods of time or injured and can not work, or killed leaving dependents behind.

Fixed income benefits need to be increased with inflation for all people dependent upon them. Why would we do less for our veteran’s than we do for social security recipients? I am not familiar with the base formula for determining initial benefits veterans, so I cannot honestly compare them to what social security recipients receive regarding overall ‘fairness’ or equity. Nonetheless, benefits should be indexed to inflation by some standard form of COLA adjustment.

I hope this will happen. Our country has a shameful record of taking care of its veterans, other than saying "Thank you for your service." I wish I could see Congress doing ANYTHING other than shoving yet another bill onto Mitch McConnell's desk. Of course, if there were another ultra-conservative Republican judge to approve...

These things ought to be automatic. SS, veterans benefits, minimum wage, unemployment, EBT, military pay ect. ect. ect. All that stuff. They need to automatically adjust tied to the CPIH.

If we were in normal times I would feel no words are necessary to justify this bill for the rationale is obvious. These aren’t normal - ordinary times. To ask our Veterans and their families to survive without the same cost of living adjustments (or more) is to treat them t like their cast a-ways ... is that the message?

My father is a disabled veteran. Disabled because the government used agent orange and he was exposed. He depends on that money to live. As cost of living goes up it will not be enough to support him.

Cost of living allowance is to keep up with increases in actual expense cost. It’s not a raise. It’s a term of pension & benefits. It must be computed to actually result in an increase in income or be equal to the increased cost of health & life insurance. No cuts to income The purpose of COLAs so people’s fixed income is not cut. For the past 3 years, my income was cut annually to pay increases in health insurance premiums. Federal employees retirees & Social Security recipients cannot afford this. Research the purpose of COLAs. The president & Congress don’t.

We owe veterans everything. There are only a few people that sacrifice as much as they do. Please repay the debt that we owe them.

Inflation is real and veterans need to adjust every year for these changes.

That this has to be voted on and is not automatic is fucked up.
