Giving Unauthorized Immigrants Resident Status in Exchange for Service in the Military

Argument in favor

Allows unauthorized immigrants to prove American allegiance through military service, while offering a solid path to permanent resident status.

If you are willing to die for the country, you should be given a path to legalization.

Foreigners have served in our military ever since the Hessians and French fought for us in the American Revolutions. Anyone who willingly serves in our military should be given resident status so that they can then apply for citizenship like every other legal immigrant.

If these people are able to serve in the military and willing, this is a fantastic way for them to become U.S. citizens.

Argument opposed

This bill allows people who are here illegally to skirt the law while giving them the benefits that come with serving the nation in the armed forces.

The military can be 1 option. How about any form of public service and Americorp.

I have to oppose this, not because I'm against giving a path to legalization for those entered the country illegally but because of the risk of abuse. Putting someone in the situation of having to choose military service or deportation of perhaps not just themselves but their families as well reaks of coersion. Not to mention potentially filling the military with unwilling participants.

Come to America legally. Go through the process of becoming a U.S. Citizen. Then if you are accepted, based on merit, then and only then can you enter our military.

If they are willing to fight for us, they should be given the opportunity to become citizens. However, the military should not be the only path for those already here to earn citizenshio.

Knowing how this country works, we are going to abuse this for the advantage of the wealthy. No. I wouldn't even die for our country in our present situation, knowing we allow domestic terrorists to kill innocent people but want me to go overseas and should a child?! No. We are so backwards it is unacceptable. If they wish to obtain legal status for the country, be a productive member of it, seeing how not even half of the country is a positive productive member that's already better.

At this point we just need to get these people documented. This is a fair tradeoff, service for status.

This will be abused by the government. I can see ICE rounding up illegal immigrants and forcing them to serve. Why let American citizens die in needless wars when you can have none citizens do? It's a new form of indentured servitude. These children were brought here by their parents and shouldn't be punished for it. Military service does not denote a love for America nor does asking someone to die or go back to where they came from. Let's look at over options that would actually benefit our country like AmeriCorps or other forms of public service.

If they are willing to serve, unlike our toddler in chief who had somewhere around 4 deferments , let them. They are more patriotic in my opinion However, give them citizenship instead of a green card. We have always had non citizens in our armed forces. Unlike our toddler in chief ,who had somewhere around 4 deferments ,

Look at our history. Many who immigrated used the military to better their lives and become residents and citizens of this country.

There are so many things wrong with this Enlist Act, I'm not sure where to begin. Right now the US isn't even good at allowing volunteers to serve in the military (hello transgender ban), why should they be allowed to pluck kids off the street for military exploitation.

Well, seeing how we already do this for linguists we pick up all over the world (Afghanistan, Iraq, etc.) I would say we can extend that same program to any immigrant that meets the physical, moral, and mental requirements of all military service members.
