Do States and the Feds Need to Offer Out of Work Coal Miners Retraining Opportunities?

Argument in favor

Coal miners who’ve lost their jobs because of federal regulations imposed on their industry deserve help while they’re retrained to work other sectors of the economy.

We need a series of new deal style reforms, especially in the style of education, and job training. Nothing would benefit this country more, economically.

If we are going to convert to cleaner energy then those in industries such as coal and petroleum need to know they are not being ignored. They will need to know that their pensions are safe. That there is a way to learn new skills so they are able to take care of their families.

Miners built our energy industry, and should be considered as we transition into a new age of energy innovations.

Argument opposed

Just because a person worked in an industry that’s suffered job losses because of federal regulations doesn’t mean they should receive retraining assistance.

Stop the restrictions that are causing the miners to be out of work.

These people need help; that's for sure! Instead of retraining them, HOW ABOUT ABROGATING THE EPA AND DOI RULES THAT CAUSED THEM TO LOSE THEIR JOBS?!

It seems like a nice idea but i work in the oil industry and all those i work with have skills that would allow them to work in many other locations, I am afraid if people "exhaust their unemployment benefits" and still haven't found a job it's likely because they still live in a mining town that just doesn't offer a job, not because all they know how to do is mine. Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel it might need people giving up their homes to move to a better market and not just getting some training.

Re-training an industry's population that is now proven a harm to our environment and health is the only way we can look forward without throwing hard-working Americans under the bus.

The federal government is poor at everything it does. It would be a mistake to spend money on training programs run by the same people who are unable to balance a budget, or read the constitution with higher than a first grade comprehension level.

When I lost my job in 2008, I was offered job retraining. I don't see any reason why these people shouldn't be offered the same.

Being laid off is scary. Between me and my husband I've done it twice. But we as a people have to be smart about how much we depend on government to solve these types of problems; it comes at a cost and this issue does not seem to be worth the tradeoff. And life is all about trade offs, amiright? I would rather see funds go to underprivileged schools. Let's give kids a solid start on life. And I still believe that a hard-working person can rise up in this country, especially with on-the-job learning from employers who know just what the market wants and needs.

On the surface I'm in favor of this piece of legislation. However, the one thing I fear is are we opening Pandora's box. Are we going to do this any time government action leads to a loss of jobs or a workforce? When decreases in education funding lead to teacher layoffs will these people get retraining through the same ruling? If minimum wage laws lead to automation of certain industries are those people going to get retraining? It is a great concept, but like many entitlements in this country we have to also consider where the funding is coming from.

Just unregulated the energy sector and we would see an explosive growth in the industry. The epa has been a disaster.
