house Bill H.R. 5611

Do Terror Suspects Need to be Blocked From Buying a Gun Until They’re Cleared by a Court?

Argument in favor

More needs to be done to stop the radicalization of would-be terrorists, and this bill will improve the federal government’s ability to stop their travel and gun purchases without violating their right to due process.

While a person is " suspect" gun sales should be held until investigation is complete

I support this legislation. If the FBI says you're dangerous, then you shouldn't be allowed to buy a gun.

No terror suspect should ever have access to any sort of firearm until cleared by a court. It is much too risky.

Argument opposed

This bill’s gun control provision may very well be unconstitutional. It would allow the government in some circumstances to infringe on a person’s gun rights because of a crime that they hadn’t yet committed.

Our justice system is built on the idea that the accused is innocent until proven guilty. Blocking the purchase of a gun because one is suspect is a complete contradiction of that principle. And in the case of someone wrongly suspected, which has happened, lasting, near irreparable damage can be done to that person's reputation as well as future attempts to purchase a firearm.

1. A person is presumed innocent, until proven guilty! 2. A person shouldn't be deprived of his/her right(s) without due process. 3. Suspicion is not adequate grounds for depriving someone of a right. 4. If terrorists can't obtain guns legally, they'll either obtain them illegally or they'll use some other type of weapon. 5. GUN CONTROL LAWS WILL NOT KEEP CRIMINALS FROM OBTAINING AND USING GUNS. 6. I have no respect for anyone who attempts to chip away at the Second Amendment right of American citizens, under the guise of "protecting us".

This is a direct attack on 2 Unalienable Rights, you're right to bare arms and your right of be innocent until proven guilty. This is extremely unconstitutional and has no business even being on the house and senate floors. Besides, the people who commit these atrocities will stop at nothing to do their bad deeds.. If they can't buy a gun legally they will get it by way of the black market. To think this will stop them is insanity, all it will do is take rights away from law abiding citizens. And you won't even know if you are in the list until you get denied, and what are the prerequisites of being on the list? And who determined them? This gives the federal government way to much power.

Most people are not even made a aware they are on any such list. Constitutional rights are not subject to the dynamic whims of a government agency.

Key Word: "Terror Suspect." If a citizen is just suspected, then NO. However, Yes if the citizen has been convicted. Still not guilty if not convicted. But naturally, this only applies if the Constitution and codified Laws are followed, which doesn't seem to be the Government tact of late. For example, rotting from head, Hillary didn't intend to violate the law. NON INTENTIONAL MISCONDUCT! Can Gen Petraeus sue to have his charges reduced to NON INTENTIONAL MISCONDUCT!

In America, a suspect (person-of-interest) is not a criminal. So where is the list of Terror Suspects and Terrorist Sympathisers published? An honorable citizen and patriot of this country could be on the list and not know they are suspects. You cannot Google for truth about your Govt-Agency suspect-status much less anyone else's. Every time I go to the airport or to a border for a trip. I fear I may be summarily found to be on a list I don't know about nor can I challenge.

This is a huge abuse of the presumption of innocence. How can you strip someone of there rights without cause? Where would this end?

Goal is noble. Means is still not correct in this bill. Due process must be provided. Terror watch lists notoriously fail in the due process now. Adding gun purchases to what they control only make that worse. Fix the due process component of the list, and then consider the gun "aspect" to their use. Orlando shooter wasn't on the list. Recent shooters were more known to close associates for mental health issues than terror connections or expressed beliefs.

The GOP is sponsoring a bill that touches gun reform? 😮 This is a no-brainier. If you're suspected of terrorist intentions, you should not be able to buy a weapon. Hopefully we can get some bipartisan support on this one!

Please do not support this or any gun control measure put forth. It is not about keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, it is about tying the hands of law abiding citizens.

BO sicced the IRS on voters who contributed to conservative causes; HRC sicced the IRS on bloggers and journalists who opposed her and her perjuring husband; Billy-boy Clinton, through Janet Reno (the then-AG whom HRC urged him to appoint to that post), loosed the FBI on children who were burned to death in Waco; liberal justices legislate that Christians will be bankrupted for running businesses according to our faith, in violation of the U.S. Constitution, the supreme law of the land. The original purpose of U.S. citizens' right to bear arms is to protect ourselves against an overbearing government. The actions of arrogant political swine -- and all their appointees -- obviate that we need that right and it must NEVER be banned by any political actions by any government entity.

Our Constitution says we are innocent until proven guilty. This bill if passed can be easily abused to deny 2nd Amendment rites to anyone just by having an investigation without trial.

The government has shown in the recent years and especially now how they manipulate the laws to suit their agendas. I forsee this putting many Americans on a list that are not terrorists and attempting to take their 2nd amendment rights away. There is a process in our Bill of Rights called Due Process and a reason why they are in place. I do not support this Bill and hope my representatives can see the gross infringement that can take place on innocent Americans in a time when they need it most. Thank You for your time Angel--TN
