house Bill H.R. 5445

21st Century IRS Act: Modernizing Technology & Preventing Identity Theft at the IRS

Argument in favor

This commonsense, bipartisan bill would overhaul the IRS so that the agency can make better use of technology in collecting taxes while improving identity protections for taxpayers.

It’s about time. And the IRS isn’t the only area of government that needs upgrading. That’s partly how the Russians hacked our election so easily.

I can't believe this hasn't been done yet!!!! It would seem that our government agencies that hold all our vital information are far behind the times and I'm sick of it. Yet our lawmakers are still doing little or nothing about it. What the hell are we paying these useless do nothings for? The news this morning stated that there's a glitch in the IRS system and could delay processing

I’m not saying this is a bad idea. I’m just wondering where it was ten years ago.

Argument opposed

There’s no need to modernize the technology used by the IRS or expand consumer protections. If taxpayers don’t know how to use a fax machine that’s their own problem.

I have a better idea. Pass the Fair Tax, dissolve the IRS. Don’t waste money on new technology for this band of robbers.

There are a couple of things which bother me about this bill. First, the entire government needs to be secured against the theft of computerized information, not just the IRS. This all needs to be thought through more carefully and given more direct and comprehensive funding than some user fees. Second, I am not sure what kind of public/private partnership is being proposed here but, truthfully, the government needs to guard against the intrusion of private interests into government business and the business of our citizens. This whole thing needs a lot more work before it becomes law.

Having just read that Mitch McConnell blocked protecting Robert Mueller, and noticing the Orwellian misnaming of most legislation from Republicans, I am leery about what is hidden. Knowing how many seniors and how many poor people have to pay to use library computers, and how the poor work several jobs cobbled together, often on call, the electronic requirement bothers me as arduous for them. Sounds good. What’s the catch?

I’m always in favor of the government updating their technology to make life more convenient for everyone. It’s time to actually bring the IRS and many other government agencies into the modern age.

I cannot believe we are even asking this question after the proof that Russia essentially, and LITERALLY hacked the US election process in 2016. I literally cannot believe we are even having to DISCUSS

How about we rid of the IRS, and we force the government to spend much less than it receives. Revenue is not an issue in America, it's government spending that's out of control.

A professor in California has tax software that makes it simple to file but Intuit and H & R Block have stopped it from being used. We need to modernize the system so we don't spend days doing our taxes.

If you have ever have your identity stolen it is horrible, fight against it. Tax time is the worst.

I’m wary about public private partnerships but there’s a lot of goods in this bill. I just worry about a Republican Congress “modernizing” the IRS when all they want to do is demolish it for their rich donors.

I would really have to think about this. 1. A Republican has introduced it, and we all know how much Republicans know about modern technology. 2. This may be a way of protecting Trump's tax returns from being released. For now I vote Nay.

The IRS is still using technology from the 60’s and identity theft and criminals preparing and stealing our tax returns is at an all time high. It will just get worse if we don’t bite the bullet and do some sensible and modernizing upgrades now.

We must give government the tools to continue to operate effectively and with reasonable efficiency lest private entities intrude with promises of 'fixing' the system, only to end up rigging the system in their favor. Government needs to work for the people, not just big corporations.
