Do All Detainee Transfers From Guantanamo Bay Need to be Put On Hold?

Argument in favor

Some of the detainees transferred from Guantanamo Bay to other countries have returned to terrorism, so all transfers should be put on hold until a defense spending plan is released.

They should never have been let out in the first place.

Absolutely- without question. The only exception if they were transferred to the firing squad - at GITMO.

Argument opposed

The longer that the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay remains open and functional, the more damage will be done to America’s reputation by the very terror groups it seeks to thwart.

They're human beings, not comic book super-villains. They CAN be safely transferred to any super-max prison.

They should've been moved a long time ago. It costs roughly $2.5 million per detainee per year to hold them at Gitmo. That's enormous! Also, 70+ detainees have been cleared for release. We can safely hold everyone in the U.S for a fraction of the cost. By the way, only 5% of the detainees in Gitmo were actually detained on the battlefield and only 8% were al-Qaeda fighters. So don't give me this "they are the worst of the worst" bullshit. Yes, some are bad and a very small few are very bad, but we have created far more terrorists because of Gitmo than we have ever detained there.

Good grief. Let me say first: I do NOT approve of terrorism in any form--no matter who the terrorist is or their country of origin. Having said that, Guantanamo is a terrorist factory! As long as it exists, we will never be safe nor will we ever regain the moral authority that the Bush administrative destroyed when President Bush chose invade Iraq without provocation. It represents & documents EVERY anti-American argument by anyone who wishes us harm. It undermines any argument about what we stand for: personal, economic & religious freedom, equality, rule of law, fairness, honesty, etc. ALL the things that we identify as core values of our way of life and our form of government. (I am aware, as is anyone with eyes to see, that our image of ourselves & our country is largely a myth. Nevertheless, it is a myth we hold dear and, fantasy or not, it is powerful and represents the best impulses of our culture & history. Perhaps the best humans have conceived on a large scale!) Speaking of mythology, our elected idiots (hello, Sen Rubio, Rep DeSantis!) want us to believe that keeping these men imprisoned prevents disaster. RUBBISH! How does Guantanamo or anyone there relate to the Boston bombing, the massacre in San Bernadino, the Ft Hood shooting, the Aurora theatre massacre (domestic terrorism), the Charleston massacre (domestic terrorism), the Sandy Hook massacre (domestic terrorism), etc. I argue the relationship is only our self-tarnished image & our tacit endorsement of torture & blatant injustice. Even if some of the detainees go back to terrorism, they are more likely to kill Muslims in the Middle East than to kill Americans here. CLOSE IT! Send them all to some place far, far away. End the madness that has destroyed the United States as a city on a hill. This is a leftover from the self inflicted wound that Dick Cheney's greed and George W.'s stupidity visited on us. Suspend your own greed & stupidity and end it it!

It is time to put an end to this embarrassing segment of the United States history. In my lifetime, I never thought there would be a place that the United States government would torture individuals for any reason as torture is not about justice but retribution. It is also expensive to keep Guantánamo open as a detention center especially for so few "detainees." It is unfortunate that this territory of the United States of America has been used illegally to sidestep the Constitution and deny legal recourse for people who may or may not be guilty of any crimes against the United States (Guantánamo is US territory not unlike an embassy and has been for many decades.). These are all good reasons to bring its stent as a detention center to an end.

Are we seriously still falling for the mass media push on terrorism? Can we please treat people like humans rather than material... If we don't stop what's happening now how long does it take for US Citizens to go to Gitmo without a fair trial?

We are spending $$$$ to detain people indefinitely. This is illegal, and is hurting our international reputation. If there is enough evidence to charge someone, then CHARGE THEM and be done with it! If there is not evidence, then it is cruel and inhumane to keep someone in prison. We are housing both innocent people, and criminals from other countries. It's time to send them home.

Wake up to what you already know! This whole plan of detention is only needlessly costing US more money-Deficit, and decreasing our reputation around the world. Are we really more safe? We have more hardened criminals already incarcerated. Are we endangering ourselves? Who is shooting up our communities, terrorists or just our own criminals? If you really want to be thrifty and still preserve our safety, why not close this anachronism and feed the funds to our reliable prison system till we dispose of the remaining detainees as planned. How many of these detainees have been 'indicted'? Get real!

This prison is illegal. Terrorists or not at least treat them like humans and not compromise our values like all the other horrible regimes we got taught about in school. AND FOR CHRIST SAKE WE'RE NOT FREEING THESE PEOPLE FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO CANT READ. We're transferring them out of Cuba to the US or its territories to save us money and also stop violating international laws with a loophole prison in Cuba

Most of the detainees aren't even terrorists. I don't think it's in alignment with Americas values to detain someone in awful conditions who deserves to be released. Also, this is further deteriorating our reputations with other countries who see this as ridiculous and I humane.

Because we all know where they will go! Their terrorist desires may have been put on hold for a period of time, but once they're freed they will resume with the help of their friends!. It's called revenge!
