Vote NO on H.R. 5325, the Senate Continuing Resolution Vehicle "... I urge you to contact your senators and ask them to vote NO on H.R. 5325, the vehicle for the continuing resolution (CR) expected to be considered by the Senate this week. The legislation violates the conservative principles of fiscal responsibility by pushing tough spending decisions into the lame duck session of Congress, rather than into 2017. This short term funding measure reinforces the status quo, damages our economy, and fails to honor regular order. The CR being considered by the Senate will extend government spending only until December 9, 2016, instead of into 2017 as preferred by conservatives. In the lame duck session of Congress that will be guaranteed by the CR, members of the House and Senate will be faced with the prospect of voting on funding the federal government well into 2017 through an omnibus, or a series of minibuses. This CR will set up an effort to pass a funding bill in December when both chambers are at their least accountable to the people, with some members departing, and the current session of Congress drawing to a close. Moving forward with the CR represents a conscious choice to exercise the power of the purse in a manner that marginalizes regular order and ignores the concerns of the large coalition that opposes a short term CR. This resolution will perpetuate the status quo in Congress that has our country staggering under the weight of congressional failures to control spending.
