Should the Feds Report on the Number & Status of School Resource Officers in Public Schools?

Argument in favor

Congress should get a sense of public schools’ usage of school resource officers as it develops solutions for improving school safety. ‘Hardening targets’ such as schools, using local law enforcement and resources can better protect our institutions from those wishing to do harm.

While this is a good idea, a better idea would be effective gun control. Congress apparently does not have the fortitude to do things that are really important

Collect the data. Without information we can’t make evidence-based decisions.

Argument opposed

Congress shouldn’t be compiling data on the prevalence of school resource officers as the militarization of schools is bad for education, and will do little to further secure schools and other potential targets from those wishing to commit acts of violence.

How about we control guns and offer counselors to the student.

Just pass common sense gun control measures, like Australia, and move on.

The federal government has no role in public schools. This is a state and local issue. Keep them out of your schools. Public schools should all have a “Federal Government Free Zone.”

The GOP needs to grow a spine and stop pushing the shameless NRA BS solution of stopping gun violence with more guns and pass federal gun reform laws that make sense with comprehensive background checks.

There were armed resource officers outside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, all of whom failed to engage the shooter and proved themselves to be ineffective. We need common sense gun control legislation, not more resource officers.

It’s a local issue for school boards to address.

School safety is a local Law Enforcement issue, and should remain that way. While data collection does not hurt, this smacks of micromanagement and it does not need to be done at the federal level.

I don’t want the current administration’s ideas anywhere near my children’s schools... they say properly trained people should have guns in schools. Well then, why did an off duty cop accidentally fire his gun at a Fowlerville, Mich highschool wrestling match, lodging a bullet in the gym floor, if properly trained people don’t have gun accidents?! GUN CONTROL NOW!!

If this was part of an approach that included serious gun control, I might be for it. But it is obviously an excuse to further militarize schools, ignoring the real solutions, and potentially making students less safe.
