house Bill H.R. 4923

Lowering Tariffs on Intermediate Goods for U.S. Manufacturers

Argument in favor

American manufacturers need help competing in the global economy, and reducing tariffs on goods they use in making their products well help those businesses thrive. This legislation empowers them to directly request changes in tariffs without relying on Congress and makes the process more transparent.

Lower taxes and tariffs in general, we need government to get out of our economic lives. The amount of taxes and regulations put on against companies and businesses is not helping the free market. We should lower things such as corporation tax and tariffs to benefit businesses, which will lead to benefits all around.

We should stop punishing businesses for making money, and start encouraging them to help the economy by staying in the country.

Tariffs raise prices on domestically manufactured goods and the prices manufacturers are able to offer their trading partners for their goods, forcing consumers at home to pay more as well as reducing their ability to compete in the world market

Argument opposed

The existing process for reducing tariffs on American manufacturers is good enough and doesn’t need to be reformed. Members of Congress are very responsive to the concerns of their constituents in the business community, so manufacturers don’t need to directly request changes in tariffs on imports.

Tariffs are either enacted by Congress or they are not. There should not be some super-secret executive-branch process by which the well-connected can secure a more favorable business climate through their "man in Washington". If a tariff is bad for American interests overall, and many are, Congress must be the branch to repeal it.

I think this is a good idea, BUT the process in which one goes about "petitioning" is rife with bureaucracy. Reduce tariffs across the board or do nothing. This Bill leaves too much room for arbitrary decisions by unelected officials.
