house Bill H.R. 4899

Expanding Offshore Drilling On Both Coasts

Argument in favor

Federal regulations are handcuffing American energy independence. This bill would lower energy costs and create jobs in the oil industry.

In the here and now, drilling for oil is our best bet for financial freedom from OPEC. HOWEVER, this does NOT mean we turn our backs on developing new technologies for renewable energy sources. The sun, wind, and water are the future of the USA.

America must explore and responsibly use our natural resources for the well-being of our citizenry and our industry. America needs to be free from foreign influence and become self-sustaining. This is best accomplished through responsible ways and means for the extraction and use of carbon based fuels. While at the same time expanding green and sustainable fuel and energy sources. We must be good stewards of all fuel and energy sources available for the well-being and prosperity of our American and the world we live in. No one group can reasonably say that their way is the only way or the best way. All of the fuel sources available to us must be responsibly and fervently pursued.

We need to both cut our dependence on foreign oil and increase renewable green energy. This helps accomplish the former. All we need to do it work on it and the latter.

Argument opposed

Remember the BP oil spill? This bill all but guarantees a sequel. Expect higher Big Oil profits and no savings at the pump.

BP oil spill killed 8,000 animals, covered 16,000 miles of coastline, and put 200 million gallons of crude oil into the ocean less than 3 months. Let's try something else.

While I'm a huge fan of energy independence, drilling is gross and hurts the environment. We should be focusing on how we can make energy clean.

We need to focus our energies on renewable energy sources, not fossil fuels. Expanding ocean drilling only delays renewable energy development.

Fewer restrictions on the market, and if we don't allow our companies to drill there, companies from other countries will and in some places already are.

The future lies with nuclear and renewable clean energy. Business of the future will create millions of high paying engineering jobs and factory installment jobs. This will generate billions in revenue across world markets. Oil became the dependent commodity it is today after World War Two. Let's stop looking back to 1945 and open our eyes to the potential that lies ahead.

We have fossil fuel resources to last in the foreseeable future. There's no need for additional drilling at this point. If we focus on strategy renewable sources of energy, our existing resources for fossil fuels should carry us into the transition into the next fuel generation.

There should be more investment in finding alternative energy sources, or improving the ones we have. Oil won't last forever.

All of our resources should be focused on transition to clean non-fossil energy. We need to face the fact that fossil fuels are bad and start in earnest leaving them in the ground.
