house Bill H.R. 489

Do States Need to Report How Many Tax Dollars go to Abortion Services and Organizations?

Argument in favor

This bill requires that states file reports on how much Medicaid money is used for abortions. Medicaid is funded by taxes. People have the right to know how their taxes are being spent, especially if they have moral qualms about abortion.

Transparency in funding is valuable regardless of which side of the argument you are on.

Yes, and hopefully we can pass legislation to make sure this number is always $0.00.

Absolutely yes. I want to know how much of our money goes to the abortion industry. I support this bill.

Argument opposed

Just look at this bill’s title. “Conscience Protection”? You can dress this up as a government accountability move, but it’s clearly just an attempt to rattle the rage cage of anti-abortion and anti-government agitators.

Two words: Hyde Amendment. Tax dollars do not fund abortions. Full stop.

It would be easy to support this with vague comments like "I like transparency," but we already know the total funds distributed per state. With things like human trafficking going on in this country, compiling information to be used by Republican candidates to scare voters with isn't the most appropriate use of funds at the moment.

This is another waste of tax payer dollars to track legal activities. I suspect that this is another way to intimidate women from getting abortions.

I'm all for transparency, but why single out abortion for transparency? Oh, right: it'll upset people.

Because it isn't written in the constitution that we need to pander to the curiosities of the WASPS and over reactive lonely hateful christian housewives.

Your tax dollars go to better the nation. If you wanna see where your tax money goes, then you should go to Iraq and see how they are doing. You pay taxes to live here, where the taxes go is the government's job, not the tax payers.

There are too many religious groups spending too much time focusing on abortion coverage. Women should have full access to these health services just as they should to any other health service.

Why should they? It is a waste of taxpayers money. Abortion is legal in all 50 states

It's amusing how many liberals are suddenly concerned about "wasteful government spending" when it comes to this issue. We deserve to know how much of our money the government uses to fund murder. If you're concerned about government spending, perhaps you would agree that we should stop the funding of abortions entirely?

Yes, although I am not totally against abortions, I feel sometimes there are necessary, but I do not believe simply on the foundation that it's a woman's body and therefore her choice because killing another person no matter how small should not be simply anyone's choice without significant reasons. I also believe that if TAX PAYERS MONEY is used for what ever reason there should be a clear paper trail.

I have to account for every penny of expenditure in my tiny business, or the IRS will be a pain up the crack. Shouldn't all levels of government have to do what is expected of us, the U.S. taxpaying citizen?

Sure we should know where the money goes. Just as long as I get to know what exactly the defense department's latest audit was. Oh yeah that's right, never gonna happen. I'm really weary of religion in politics , let's face the truth! Isn't that really the issue behind anti abortion issues?

The point here isn’t whether or not you’re pro or anti abortion. The point is whether or not you believe each state should be required to report where all of their tax money is spent, which this is a step towards. I can’t imagine anyone being against this unless they have ulterior motives, unrelated to the bill. The only other argument I can think of is, “reporting tax money is a decision best left to the states.” Generally I’m for state autonomy but in this instance I disagree.

This is a way to deny a woman's control of her body.

No. This is just another sick attempt at violating a woman's body and her right to choose. If you don't support abortion, don't have one. But until you have been put through some of the horrible situations these women have experienced stay out of their vaginas.
