Sanctuary Campuses: Should Colleges That Don’t Comply With Immigration Law Be Denied Federal Funding?

Argument in favor

Colleges and universities that refuse to comply with immigration law should have their federal funding for student loans and grants cut off. If the people who live in that state support that policy, they can pick up that tab.

If campuses are refusing to abide by federal law, they shouldn't receive federal funding.

“Sanctuary campus” policies and refusal to cooperate with federal law should be considered like "sanctuary cities/counties/states. Violations of Federal Law should be applied equally to ALL jurisdictions and not allowing "checkerboard" enforcement.

Argument opposed

It would be incredibly spiteful to deny institutions of higher education access to loans that enable more students to further themselves academically simply because the school doesn’t want to help deport unauthorized immigrants.

It is not universities job to help deport people, it is to educate the next generation!

Sanctuary campuses make it safer for vulnerable people to report crime, not commit it.

Universities cannot give any sort of aid to illegal immigrants. Cutting funding to an institution means closing the door of opportunity to citizens and legal residents who cannot afford to pay on their own. Cutting funding will also put a halt on research from science to other academics that can change the world.

No. Simply no. This should not be what the USA is what. Do what's right, Rep. Davis. Don't be a dick.

The role of higher education is education and research. Schools are not federal agencies tasked with the execution of immigration laws. There is a clear misunderstanding or refusal to understand that Sanctuary status reduces crime. If you witness a crime, why on earth would you call 911 if you knew that those coming to address what you witnessed would be more likely to deport you than actually deal with the reason they were called?

Are you kidding me? Punish the educational centers of our country for maintaining open doors for young minds regardless of background? Please do not tell me you want to only educate young minds of a specific background...

Voting yes for this bill would be incredibly spiteful and also extremely detrimental to the students who depend on these grants and loans for their education. These students have no say in the policies of the universities and it would be unfair to punish them for any action a university might take.

Cutting off federal student loans to schools providing sanctuary only serves to punish students attending those schools who are relying on federal student loans in order to attend. This will not hurt the schools. It will hurt the students. Shame on them for even considering interfering with the higher education of our young citizens.

Universities aren't immigration officers, try providing funding for immigration officers if that's the goal here.

Public institutions serve the purpose of educating students and providing innovation for society as a whole. Defunding public institutions for educating "illegal" immigrants will undermine both. It will reduce scientific research, minimizing technological and scientific process, and ultimately lessen our potential to solve the giant problems our world faces: disease, climate change, etc etc

The unintended consequences in the form of decreased research productivity, much of which is funded by government grants, would be severe and possibly disastrous. It would be a huge step backward to defund a university over something so entirely petty. In addition, rescinding these institutions' ability to accept spell grants would have see thousands of lower-income students, all of whom are legal residents, unable to continue their education.

No. Why harm students education! You are messing with our future. Of all the issues in America, this is on your list, really? Trump is killing tax payer money flying to Florida, extra police force, secrecy service protecting Trump Tower. Secrecy Service renting rooms from Trump Tower that goes into the pocket of Trump. Are you really going to let him walk over you without standing up for our Country? You are supposed to be our voice. Please listen to us and do your jobs! This is out of.control. Education is important. Putting money in the president' pockets is not good. Our country has had enough. Make America Smart Again. Protect our colleges and universities. "Sigh"
