Should it be Easier to Unsubscribe From Emails?

Argument in favor

Receiving endless commercial emails is annoying and clogs inboxes. It should as easy as possible for consumers to unsubscribe from all emails they don’t want.

I mean as long as this bill is up sure, I guess, but like many people saying nay on this, I believe this is literally one of the least important issues Congress could be spending their time on, I'd like to know whose office this came out of and that more important bills they were ignoring to push this through

Consumers should have an easy way to opt out of junk emails, junk mail, and junk phone calls. If we can't have a federal "do not email" list like the "do not call" or "do not mail" then we can at least ensure an easy way for consumers to unsubscribe from unwanted emails.

The federal government shouldn’t be determining how businesses let email recipients unsubscribe from emails, people can figure it out for themselves.

WHY DON'T YOU PEOPLE IN CONGRESS FOCUS ON THE ISSUES THAT ARE REALLY IMPORTANT!!! This is not something you need to be wasting your time and my dollars on!! Criminey! Congress, you really have BIGGER issues to deal with. Stop wasting tax payers money on these little issues and deal with issues that are causing real suffering. Cut regulations, cut taxes for businesses, that will help lead to job growth so people can stop suffering with the current efforts to stifle jobs.

Frankly, I find I easy to unsubscribe from unwanted email- well, most of the time. If I may turn the question around, why is this a proposed bill? Why must the Congress continue to seek control of the Internet? Personally, I would rather see Congress probe USPS junk mail. Isn't it nice to only find important mail instead of all the advertising? Ever wonder why the Post Office delivers? Because it pays the bloated payroll. Maybe the Dem-NY Congressional member had failed to read all that fine print on how to unsubscribe.

    Stop the nonsense of: Congress has other things to worry about, stop wasting our money! As a user of this app, you know Congress focuses on many, many issues and that they do a lot more than people give them credit for. No, they're not perfect, but they do a lot. Just stick to the actually piece of legislation.

    To answer Countable's question: Yes. It should be easier to unsubscribe. I don't support this bill because it's not within the scope of Congress's authority. A good idea doesn't necessarily make good legislation. In fact, it very rarely does.

    This is bordering on the least important thing Congress could be debating. It is not Congress's job to regulate emails. Not your call. If I find the inability to opt out of a company's emails frustrating, I'm going to do two things: (1) set up a filter in my email so that they go straight to the trash folder, and (2) stop patronizing that company. If enough people do that they get the message loud and clear, and they adjust their practices accordingly. There, no federal overreach required.

    Consumers subscribe for company emails, knowingly or not, at point of sale. This is the consumer responsibility; they opt-in and extend their private information. Thus, it is fair for companies to request reason of un-subscription. I do not support this particular private sector meddling, hyper-bureaucratic measure.

    While I agree that a lot of sites make it confusing and difficult to unsubscribe from emails, we haven't reached some critical mass that requires the Federal government to intervene. This is ridiculous.

    The fact this bill exists is clear evidence that we have allowed unrestrained capitalism to take precedence over every other value: privacy, personal choice, economic responsibility. Now might be the time to scale back on rapacious advertising.

    Whether or not you think Congress should be "voting/debating on more important things" is a tad irrelevant to the "yea or nay," considering this bill is already up. Yes I support it--helps low-media-literacy people stop themselves from being spammed and even scammed. I do partially agree that there are bigger issues to worry about, but the impactful solution there is to contact our reps and tell them so, rather than give a "protest nay" on this app.

    This would help my inbox from getting out of control! Unwanted emails are the worst, they often use bait and switch tactics to get you to subscribe then unleash unwanted solicitation. Annoying

    I can't believe Congress is getting involved in such an insignificant matter. This is an inconvenience, not an issue. We have humanitarian crises, government shutdowns, war looming, cyber rights issues, and more. Focus on getting a budget together and not triggering another shutdown, Congress. By the way, it's official, everyone, we're living in a real-life version of Idiocracy.
