Should Loopholes Allowing Foreign Interference & Deceptive Practices in U.S. Elections be Closed?

Argument in favor

Foreign interference is a growing and insidious problem in American elections, and should be stopped. Similarly, deceptive practices that hinder voters’ registration and votes are fundamentally undemocratic and should be stopped.

Exactly who would vote against closing loopholes permitting foreign interference and deception in US elections? Oh--that's right Moscow Mitch!

Yes, put controls on foreign influence of our elections and any offers of support by foreign nationals. There needs to be some additional cyber support to stop military psi-ops disinformation campaigns from influencing the electorate, especially by gaining detailed non-public polling data to target key districts in order to swing our outdated Electoral College voting. Dark funding to PAC’s must be prohibited- way too open to foreign influence. The FEC cannot currently vote since it has lost the required quorum and the President and Senate have not acted to appoint new members (I am not sure, but I don’t believe that the House has a direct responsibility for this). Also, there are few Congress people who want to be in an FEC hot seat this year. Finally, PAC’s are legally required to be completely free of influence from the politicians they choose to support. That doesn’t seem to be the way they are operating. trump’s campaign manager arranged for his wife to run a PAC for trump -which should be illegal. I do not believe that there was ever any enforcement guidelines for this and most politicians seem to have a blind eye. A final PAC control that should be enforced is to stop any implicit or explicit ‘guidance’ of a PAC over any elected official. Non-profit organizations should not be allowed to donate to candidates or campaigns since they obviously have profits to invest in buying political influence - so by definition, they must be profitable.

They claim that this is a Democrat plot to censure “free speech”, yet the Republicans pass laws against protest.

Argument opposed

This bill’s provisions could have a chilling effect on free speech, and could also hurt journalism. Democrats — who crafted this legislation without Republicans’ input — clearly intended it to be a partisan tool for pursuing their impeachment campaign against President Donald Trump.

A bigger problem is Facebook and Google's influence in our election.

This bill has been introduced by a hyper partisan socialist Democrat. So it’s automatically garbage.

I voted “NAY,” primarily because the Democrats would NEVER have supported such a measure while a Democrat was sitting in the White House Oval Office! Their hypocrisy knows no bounds! Like gun control legislation, this would do NOTHING to stop corrupt politicians from breaking the law. And our society is becoming increasingly LAWLESS every year!

How obvious must it be? French Hill, YOU are a disgrace to your constituents and all Americans. How do you vote no on keeping foreign money out of elections. Shame on you! What and who did you make your oath to, exactly?

Yes, we need to "combat foreign interference in U.S. elections by closing loopholes that allow foreign spending in U.S. elections, boosting disclosure and transparency requirements, and creating a duty to report illicit offers of campaign assistance from foreign nations." We need to learn from 2016, the most DANGEROUS election in United States history.

I agree this bill needs to go through on a yes vote. But I think, isn't it a shame that THE RULES need to be spelled out in detail for those people who either do not understand the constitution or are not able to read it in the first place.

So, Republicans are inviting interference in US elections. Just as they did in 2016! They are beyond redemption and their actions in the House today are criminal. Biggs is the ring leader of illegal cover ups and obstruction of justice seen since the rightful and legal hearings by the House have begun.

Common sense legislation to stop these types of situations from happening. We wouldn't need the legislation if the current president didn't keep asking foreign countries for help to win elections. But the Republicans doesn't care about fair elections so of course they are so dumb and like sheep that follows their party leaders and the dumbest president in history, instead of living by morals, norms, or values. Kipzinger needs to go because he is another puppet that has lost his way and just plays a political game with all the other morans that stopped working for the people after they took office. Unfortunately, as Americans we need to throw out all the old crap politicians... Republicans, Independents, and Democrats that vote on party lines instead of common since legislation. The system will remain broken unless we fix it and vote based on our concious, evaluations of candidates, take big money out of politics, and elect people that will hopefully place it's people first, especially when voting on something that just makes good sense. What another shameful day in american history.

“…The Constitution gives Congress the right to pursue impeachment. And a president inviting foreign interference in American affairs — for personal gain — clearly qualifies as a potential ‘high crime’…” “…For other Republicans, it’s remembering that they don’t need to submit to Trump. Even though he says the earth is flat, they can say it’s round…” David Leonhardt, NYTimes 10-9-19
