Does U.S. Foreign Aid Need to Promote Basic Education for Women and Girls in the Developing World?

Education is a powerful tool for allowing countries to grow and marginalized groups to enter the mainstream. The U.S. should direct foreign aid for education to countries where it can have the most impact and provide new opportunities for women and girls.

This bill is long overdue. Women and girls in developing nations are overlooked a lot in their societies, and educating them can not only give them opportunities to contribute to the world, but to economies of the nation's they inevitably move to.

One of the most effective means of undermining religious extremism is education. Female education is especially threatening to the jihadist ideology.

This will eventually benefit us as well because education, especially in developing countries, brings down birth rate. Obviously, a high birth rate uses up a disproportionate amount of resources and contributes to global warming and poverty due to higher unemployment. Furthermore, education is absolutely crucial to fighting the ideological war against jihadis. People join terrorist organizations because they have no other purpose in life and have been given few opportunities. If we increase education, these potential recruits will be able to find opportunities of their own and will develop a purpose that could keep them from going down the wrong path.

The U.S. needs to reevaluate its foreign aid programs in general, and while this proposal is well intentioned it won’t do much to help women and girls in societies with deeply ingrained traditions that restrict their access to education.

We are not the parents of the world. I'm all for individuals using their own money to donate to charities that help this cause but it is not a federal matter! How about investing in our own education system? Or do you like teachers having to purchase their supplies because of the lack of funding

America needs to concentrate on fixing her own problems right now! It's time to put America first! The federal government is addicted to the Nanny State mentality! And to Rep. Lowey, Ma'am, y'all screwed up OUR children's education! And the MONEY for your little pet project here IS NOT AVAILABLE, AND YOU DEMOCRAT/SOCIALISTS HAD BETTER FORGET ABOUT RAISING OUR TAXES TO PAY FOR IT AND YOUR OTHER GLOBALIST IDEAS!
Concentrate on the following (Note: these are NOT particularly listed in order of their importance! They're ALL important!):
1. Cutting regulations that are inhibiting business/job growth;
2. Making our electrical grid EMP-proof;
3. Promoting organic farming and ranching for the health of our soil, our people, and our animals;
4. Securing our borders;
5. Enforcing our immigration laws (and yes, that includes deporting all illegal aliens!);
6. Enacting E-Verify and making sure that illegal aliens are not receiving welfare benefits;
7. Passing a voter ID law that will help prevent election fraud;
8. Building up the strength and readiness of our military and making us more secure against missile attacks;
9. Stopping the influx of "refugees," including Obama's pet "unaccompanied minors";
10. Passing a law making it illegal to practice Shariah Law in the U.S.A.;
11. Stopping the killing of our bees, because our food supply relies on them and other pollinators; using bats and other natural means of controlling mosquitos;
12. Making the labelling of GMOs and country-of-origin for our food MANDATORY;
13. Approving the Keystone XL Pipeline to make America more energy independent and create more jobs;
14. Stopping the war on cops, Christians, conservatives, Caucasians, and the Constitution;
15. Voting to withdraw the United States from the United Nations;
16. Stopping foreign aid to all countries harboring and/or otherwise aiding Islamic terrorist groups;
17. IMPEACHING AND IMPRISONING BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA AND HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON;
18. Restoring Americans' rights that are enumerated in the Bill of Rights: especially freedom of religion, free speech, the right to PRIVACY, and the RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS;
19. Restoring STATES' RIGHTS and eliminating federal agencies and programs that are rightfully the purview of the states;
20. Restoring the BALANCE OF POWER in the federal government!

There are plenty of non-profits doing this. This is not the place for the federal govt to stick it's nose. What I really don't understand is how all these politicians come up with this stuff while our country is falling apart. Get your heads out of where ever politicians put them when sucking up to lobbyists and do the work of the American people!

Wasting the talents of half the world is in no one's best interest--especially ours! Women are less likely to be warlike & more likely to want diplomatic solutions to problems. Since most men want to pee on every wall they pass, encouraging women generally improves the world!
I think we need to severely cut foreign aid to other countries.

Foreign aid to any country inherently involves the theft of money from citizens of this country. We should not be sending any money to any country. It's welfare on an international level and breeds dependence. I wish them all the best, I really do, and individuals are more than welcome to send their own funds voluntarily, but foreign aid is morally wrong, for the reasons I outlined above, no matter how noble the intended recipient cause may be. It still requires forced participation and funding, which is immoral.
Money is already being budgeted for foreign aid so all the comments about how America "isn't the parent of the world" or "needs to focus on ourselves" are useless. This bill is just saying what we want to spend that money on, not do we want to spend the money. So I think women and girls are worthy of that focus.

This question should read, Should the US Government support, aid and encourage basic education in the US? Foreign Aid? Who will pay..…China, Russia or Venezuela?
The purpose of foreign aid is not to re-engineer other societies to align with the preferences of the politically correct agenda of the international development bureaucracy club.
When we enable women and girls in developing countries to become educated and contribute to society, we encourage economic growth in those countries as they are better able to access the full potential of their human capital.
Yes. Girls need loud foreign and domestic advocates in developing countries where, more often than not, patriarchal macho societies make it impossible for them to rise up.
