This bill aims to eliminate statutes of limitation on sexual assault. Such laws keep prosecutors from charging someone with sexual assault offenses committed more than a specified number of years ago.
States would have a year to get rid of their sexual assault statutes of limitation, or they will lose funding from certain federal grants given to local law enforcement agencies. This bill names grants offered through the Dept. of Justice (DOJ) Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program.
If a state fails to comply, the DOJ would be required to reduce that state's JAG funding by 20 percent.
