house Bill H.R. 425

Revoking the Passports of Members & Affiliates of Foreign Terrorist Organizations

Argument in favor

Revoking the U.S. passport of someone who has joined or supported a terrorist group will keep America safe, and making their passport only valid for travel back into the U.S. will bring them right into the hands of law enforcement.

Terrorist organizations shouldn’t have the option to keep a passport.

This is the kind of travel ban that should be in effect. Not for a certain religious beliefs.

Argument opposed

Potential terrorists will try to workaround having their passports revoked by obtaining falsified passports. And, if the would-be terrorists have second thoughts, revoking their passports may cut off their only way to escape.

The language "members and affiliates" makes me uneasy considering the steps our own government has made in brandishing activists, protesters, and Journalistd as radicals, and/or domestic terrorists. It's a slippery slope further down the authoritarian path we've been moving since the Patriot Act was enacted.

How is the government going to determine who has joined, aided, or is affiliated with a terrorist organization? Is there going to be due process? Is the government going to get approval to do this by a judge? There seems to be plenty of very important and unanswered questions here. We need to insure that there is a judicial process here to make sure it’s not a witch hunt.

We have been safe this whole time from the kind of terrorism overseas. The real problem is domestic terrorism and easy access to guns.

This sounds like another way to racially profile which this administration is so fond of doing. This is another slippery slope that I don’t feel this administration is qualified to make.

Who decides who is part of a foreign terrorist group? What constitutes "affiliated?" It leaves too much power to ground US citizens based on an unreasonable fear of foreigners.

Anyone that would base their decision on which administration is in office, clearly puts their politics ahead of public safety. The bill is either a good one or a bad one. Period. 1) it is a bi-partisan bill. 2) There is an opportunity for review/appeal. 3) There is a vehicle/opportunity to appeal in the event of an emergency. 4) Canada, with an ultra-liberal Premier, Justin Trudeau, passed a similar bill. This is just common sense. To not allow them to move around the globe unhindered, but to be able to only return to the USA where they may face charges, is a no brainer!

What do we do about all the illegal ways they move about. Also, an attack from foreigners in America is very rare. The attacks here so far were mainly from Americans. This bill is a good idea but in actuality it won’t do much if anything to keep terrorists out. They are here because they are Americans

The language "members and affiliates" makes me against this bill as it could include families and other who are not terrorists. And considering the steps our own government has made in brandishing activists, protesters, and journalists as radicals, and/or domestic terrorists. It's a slippery slope further down the authoritarian path we've been moving since Trump and his cabinet took office.

Americans are much more worried about homegrown white terrorists like the Las Vegas shooter and the kid who just gunned down a Utah University student last night than any foreign enemies. Stop stirring up fear of foreigners so we’ll agree to sanction outrageous military budgets and endless wars instead of universal health care, jobs programs, $15 living wage, free college tuition and affordable housing!

How does the government propose to identify a “supporter”? It seems to me that the language of this bill is too vague and does not merit support in its present form. The current administration could determine that any person disagreeing with its policies is a “supporter” and human rights attributed to citizens could then be abridged further than has already been done since 9/11, an event that has irrevocably changed the path of our democracy. This government is showing all the signs of becoming authoritarian and isolationist. This bill would give away more of our freedoms.
