Title

Encourage our Educators Act

Official Title

To amend the Higher Education Act of 1965 to allow an individual to qualify for both teacher loan forgiveness and public service loan forgiveness, and for other purposes.

Summary

Encourage our Educators Act This bill amends title IV (Student Assistance) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 to modify provisions of the teacher loan forgiveness program. Specifically, the legislation reduces from five to three years the period of service a full-time teacher must complete consecutively to be eligible for forgiveness under the Federal Family Education Loan or Direct Loan program. It also increases from $5,000 to $17,500 the amount of available loan forgiveness for an elementary or secondary school teacher in any subject. (Currently, forgiveness up to $17,500 is only available for a full-time secondary school math or science teacher or for a special education teacher.) The bill eliminates the prohibition on counting the same qualifying service for both the teacher and the public service loan forgiveness programs.

Betsy DeVos can not be the head of education. I am willing to fight tooth and nail and I will post this on every educational post. I look to you my elected officials to stop this madness and philibuster this if need be.

Teaching is a hard but much needed job. They don't get paid nearly enough and usually get very little respect. I feel like if we can encourage our teachers and show some appreciation, it'll be better for the students when they have a teacher who genuinely loves their job.

We need more teachers and this is a way to attract those that may otherwise leave or not join the profession.

Do NOT confirm Betsy DeVos. We need our representatives to protect our public schools. They should not be sold to the highest bidder!'

American educational systems are failing because we have deincentiveized the teaching profession. With soaring higher education costs and teacher salaries that are bottoming out, there is little way to encourage our best and brightest to put their brains towards educating our country's children.

I have been an educator for 9 years and am still paying back my undergraduate and graduate school loans. It is ridiculous that the education I received in order to educate others is still part of my monthly expenses.

Good teachers are few and far between. Our country is failing in education because we are failing our teachers. We require so much education/recurrent training & certifications of them & pay them lower than any other certified professional. They should have debt forgiveness.

Betsy DeVos is unqualified to be a champion for free public education for all. Her own non-existent experiences with those of us in the field are not only revealing, but alarming.

No to Betsy DeVos! She is unqualified by any definition. This should not be a political party thing. This is a common sense thing. She is NOT QUALIFIED!

All teachers are valuable. I appreciate that this bill levels the playing field for educators and does not place higher value on math & science teachers in a high school. Well rounded students make better citizens!

Teacher's salaries are not commensurate with their education and responsibilities and if we want to have new teachers join the profession, we need to give financial opportunities to them.

If we want new teachers to commit to educating our students, we need to offer incentive. It is a tough & often thankless job. Good teachers are worth the $!
