Should Ethics Waivers Granted to Executive Officials be Made Public?

Argument in favor

Making executive branch officials’ ethics waivers publicly available adds a layer of accountability when these waivers are granted. While past administrations have been forthcoming with this information, the Trump administration hasn’t been — that behavior shouldn’t be tolerated from the current administration or future administrations.

Why is this even a question? Common sense dictates that it should be done. Actually, why are we granting ethics waivers, anyway? God, what has our country come to? His mantra should be Make America Ashamed Again - like in the days of Nixon et al.

Why the hell are elected officials/gov. employees being granted waivers for ethics? There's enough corruption in gov. as is, we don't need to allow people to have waivers which gives them an open field to violate any and all ethical standards/practices (just look at what Trump is getting away with).

Ethics Waiver? What a bizarre concept. Are you trying to tell me that there exists a piece of paper that if properly signed, and stamped (I assume) in triplicate (another assumption) can make something unethical ethical? Bull... fucking... shit! Sell that nonsense somewhere else, cuz I’m not buying it. Reminds me of the Catholic Church selling indulgences back in the day.

Argument opposed

While there was originally a back-and-forth between the Trump administration and the Office of Government Ethics over making Trump administration officials’ ethics waivers public in 2017, the Trump administration eventually fulfilled the OGE’s request for administration officials’ ethics waivers. This proves that there’s no need for this bill.

The shouldn’t be any waivers for ethics! If your not an ethical person why should the American people have to except or tolerate have an unethical person in a position or job funded by taxpayers????? Excepting transparency is acknowledging our the acceptance of a lack of ethics.

This is another abuse of established norms by Trump&Co. that now unfortunately, requires legislation to stop it from becoming a precedent useful for corrupting future administrations. .. SAD! .. Yes, pass this and make its provisions retroactive. I can see exceptional circumstances where an ethical administration would invoke this waiver due to special circumstances. EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES! If Trump and McConnell want to keep abusing their positions to keep filling their Swamp by issuing waivers- let’s at least see who and why; The inexperienced, unqualified and/or temporarily seated Swamp of agency heads who are divesting America from its future should be prime examples.

Love me some transparency! I find the whole concept of “ethics waivers” very weird to start. It sounds a awful lot like the selling of indulgences. So yeah transparency.

I question why there’s such as thing as ethics waivers to begin with, so yes, make them public.

Absolutely. Vote yes. Support Stephen Lynch’s bill to make transparency the norm - ethics waivers must be rarely used and when they are used - the details of each candidate and her/his ethics waiver must be made PUBLIC

Yes. Sunshine is an excellent disinfectant this White House desperately needs. It will take a long time to get the stench of Trump and his ilk out of there.

Yes, if we're allowing people to be unethical, it should be clearly visible. We shouldn't let politicians hide their stuff.

Absolutely! If those we entrust with the navigation of our US ship of state are bending rules and guidelines for their behavior while in office, We the People who have entrusted them with our lives and our fortunes should know they are doing it. The upheaval of these difficult times will, I believe, result in an electorate that is wiser and more willing to take action to fulfill their role in our democracy. In fact, I believe recurring times like the ones we are currently experiencing are part of the process of honing our democracy to better represent us and honing our knowledge to better confront and address the issues that will undermine our contribution to the process of governing ourselves. Transparency in government, wherever it does not threaten our national security, should be ubiquitous. And lack of transparency should be questioned at every turn. Please vote to support passage of this bill.

Why do these even exist?!?!? Only bad can come of this! Stop, just stop. All of these past & present need to be made public and reviewed by a legal organization that fights power...off the top of my head ACLU would be a good start.

Doesn't a waiver of ethics mean the behavior is unethical? Why allow such a thing unless you support unethical behavior as in the Trump administration?

It should be absolutely mandatory that “ethical waivers” granted to anyone in government...executive, legislative, or judicial...be made public and available for review.
