Should the Dept. of Energy Support Carbon Capture and Storage Research for Natural Gas Applications?

Argument in favor

Carbon capture and storage is an important technology to reduce emissions from natural gas, which is an increasingly important energy source for the U.S. Given the increasing use of natural gas for energy generation in the U.S., the DOE should support carbon capture R&D specific to natural gas applications.

I think source carbon capture is a valid pursuit as part of a broader program to address greenhouse gas emissions. The proposed research and test programs should later be merged into a much broader climate change program, so long term benefits can be honestly assessed on a common basis with other climate management technologies. I endorse any legislation that gets a head start in controlling greenhouse gas emissions.

Research on carbon is a great way to find new techniques to limit carbon emissions entering the atmosphere. We must fight climate change. Not only would it benefit the environment, it would benefit the nation as a whole to create new energy efficient vehicles and all that.

Argument opposed

The DOE is already looking at and supporting the development of carbon capture technologies for both coal and natural gas. Additionally, given carbon capture’s high carbon cost, it may be worth considering whether the government should invest in this technology over renewables that have lower carbon footprints (such as wind, water, and solar power).

Why does mankind continue to screw things up in Nature with their "technology" and then, they have the chutzpah to think they can fix it with technology?....This earth has a time tested way of "handling" CO2 AND providing O2 at the same time.....it's called "trees" which, we keep destroying. Sucking CO2 out of the air technologically and "storing" it seems like a bad alternative....we are already "storing" nuclear waste and sludge from fracking and filling the world with garbage/plastics.......they have found polyester filiments in fish and plastic bits in water, in air and in OUR blood. This "solution" to CO2 is like fighting cancer with chemicals, when it was probably chemicals that started the cancer in the first place.

OMG, DrCindyBean, if this is true, that SOB Resident needs to reimburse us, at least, ten times the money spent for these stays, as well as the excessive fuel expense. Then he needs to be hanged for treason against the United States of America. Additionally, the military personnel involved need to turn over the requested documents, immediately, or face obstruction of justice charges and be court-martialed! These Repugnants just can’t stop giving us bull. Just want to waste more of our money. Put the money into GREEN programs, not the same old, same old, that is destroying our Earth!

Slightly off topic. But as regards jet fuel and the military. TRUMP IS A CROOK. trump is a crook. He’s stealing taxpayer money to try to keep his failing businesses afloat. Disgusting. Beyond deplorable. Despicable. You must stop trump- he’s an evil criminal, he is WENDIGO. This article below from NBC. House stonewalled in probe of military sleepovers at Trump resort The House Committee on Oversight and Reform is not getting cooperation from the Pentagon in its probe of military sleepovers at President Trump's golf resort in Scotland, a senior Democratic aide told NBC News. The conflict-of-interest probe, first reported Friday by Politico, seeks Department of Defense documents and other information related to post-election military stops in Prestwick, Scotland, not far from Trump Turnberry, according to a letter co-signed by oversight Chairman and U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md. "The Defense Department has not produced a single document in this investigation," the aide said. "The committee will be forced to consider alternative steps if the Pentagon does not begin complying voluntarily in the coming days." The letter, dated June 21 but unknown to the public until this week, states that a look at Defense Logistics Agency data shows that, since October 2017, taxpayers have spent $11 million on 629 fuel purchase orders at Glasgow Prestwick Airport in Scotland. "The jet fuel purchases appear to have supported various Defense Department missions," the letter, also signed by Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., states. The ailing airport has lost millions of dollars in revenue in recent years, according to the letter, and its existence is crucial to the golf resort's survival. The airport has offered discounts and free rounds of golf to members of the U.S. military, the letter states, citing the Guardian. A person familiar with at least one of the flights, an Air National Guard supply delivery to Kuwait, told Politico the Trump Turnberry sleepovers to and from the Middle East were unusual because the C-17 cargo plane usually stopped at U.S. or allied military bases, Ramstein Air Base in Germany or Naval Station Rota in Spain. The Politico report also says jet fuel is usually less expensive at bases. An Air Force official told the publication that staying at a luxury resort was not normal for on-duty service members traveling at taxpayers' expense. The House Oversight letter, citing the Washington Post, states losses at Trump's Scottish resort amounted to $4.5 million in 2017. Politico reported in June that revenue increased by $3.1 million the next year. The probe of government spending at the president's Scottish resort was revealed on the same day Cummings announced the Oversight Commitee is seeking more information about Vice President Mike Pence's stay earlier in the week at Trump's Irish golf resort. Pence was with his family during the stay at Trump International Golf Links and Hotel in Doonbeg, Ireland. The resort is about 180 miles away from Dublin, where the vice president met with Irish officials. Pence's chief of staff, Marc Short, said the detour to Doonbeg was suggested by the president. But the vice president's office subsequently issued a statement saying the trip to Doonbeg, where Pence has familial ties, was "solely" the idea of the vice president and his staff. Short told a New York Times reporter the vice president would cover the costs for his family's stay.

Another “WHY ARE WE DOUBLING UP ON WHAT’S HAPPENING?” Bills. The Dept of Energy is already doing this. That’s s waste of time, Money, etc. on a DUPLICATE Bill.

What’s wrong with the sun and the wind? Fracking has its own problems and is only slightly better than oil. Start planting trees and they will take care of the carbon. Make the corporations give back instead of stripping the planet so it’s not able to sustain what we have now. Our politicians need to get out of the pockets of big oil and big energy.

This is like putting a bandaid on a wound that needs stiches! Stop this stupid insanity and do away with using oil, coal and gas period! Wind and solar does not produce any CO2's whatsoever! Hello!?! Do not dump a ton of money on a waist of time to satisfy big oil, trump and the trumpets but on the simplest solution which is wind and solar power! No...wind turbines do not cause cancer. Grow up and smarten up folks before it's truly too late for us! It takes longer to build this carbon capture and costs a hell of a lot more than building wind turbines and solar panels! We need help now, not five or twenty years from now! Mother Nature just got done screaming at us in the Bahamas and she is screaming at us about the Amazon! Everyone needs to get their heads of of their behinds and wake up to what's really happening to the planet!

ABSOLUTELY NOT!! I’m all for carbon capture. I’m all for research. Absolutely NOT for the Natural Gas industry . We need to end carbon usage in this country, not figure out how to perfect the usage of an antiquated and dangerous industry.

While we continue to depend on natural gas, we should find ways to make it more sustainable and less damaging to the environment. We can put American innovation to work and try to store it and capture the carbon it emits.

We should invest in carbon capture, but not so we can continue on with fossil fuels. We need to transition away from fossil fuels ASAP, and move toward wind and solar energy. Climate change has become a climate crisis.
