Does The Government Need To Keep Track of Homemade Firearms?

Argument in favor

The public is safer if the government keeps track of firearms. Putting serial numbers on homemade weapons helps law enforcement track otherwise unidentifiable firearms.

Firearms are a public health crisis in America. Serial numbers will help to eliminate their distribution, illegal sales, and help track offenders.

America faces an epidemic of gun-related violence that puts us in great need of stronger gun safety measures. Every day, 32 Americans are murdered with guns, and 140 are treated for a gun assault in an emergency room. Death due to gunshot wounds is the second-leading cause of death for young people in the U.S., with a death rate that is nearly 12 times higher than that in other developed countries.

Argument opposed

There are already serial numbers on professionally made firearms. — and it hasn’t stopped people using them for crime. This is just more government invasion of peoples’ lives.

Bad people don't follow laws. They'll file serial numbers off, or create weapons and laugh when they hear on the news they need to register them. It only hurts people who obey the law, but I think you know this and you just don't care.

The Government should not have any possible way to register firearms. In the State of Florida it is a felony to cause a registry of guns.

No. We should be like Switzerland. Gun training for all during a year of mandatory military service during high school.

Absolutely not. The people have a right to build their own personal defense weapons.

The BATF can't even track the ones they sold internationally to Mexican drug cartels.

Public safety takes priority over everything else that could be used in an argument against this. Sure, while one could say guns are still used in crimes, but it would be more than foolish to say that it is a reason to not take more precautions. In fact, it's all the more reason these serial numbers need to exist.

How do you know if someone makes a homemade firearm? You would have to invade their privacy to know that. There's no way of telling whether or not someone made one.

It is impossible and ridiculous. Invasion of privacy and restrictions on freedoms.

Crimes will be committed with or without serial numbers. How are they going to get the serial numbers issued? Go door by door? Illegal search and seizure?

I am for anything that puts more guns in the hands of trained law abiding citizens!!!! Not all of us are sheep, some of us are sheep dogs and wish to protect ourselves and those we love.

These firearms are not allowed to be sold anyway. And how exactly do you track a firearm that "doesn't exist." That would be like hunting for unicorns.

I don't support the second amendment in general as too many people are killed each year by fire arms.

The gov. Can't even track professionally manufactured guns and they expect to track guns that can be printed at homes? That's silly. Instead we should attack the crime, not how crimes are done. Build gun awareness in High School programs, like they do with cars. Switzerland does a good job.
