We need bipartisan support to investigate the President's conflicts of interest. The citizens of this country need to know that any President of the US is only working for our country's best interests.
As a historian, I have seen over and over again that humans do not choose well when blinded by conflicts of interest. This is not a partisan issue; it is something all our legislators should support as a way to protect our democracy.
Dear Rep. Rothfus, I support H.R. 371 and it's companion bill, S.65, introduced to require the president and VP to disclose and divest financial conflicts of interest. Many suspect that President Trump has conflicts of interest that are not known. I want to be sure that White House actions serve and protect the American people, rather than personally benefit the president. I ask that you cosponsor and support H.R. 371.
This president is making a mockery of the office of President of the United States, and in doing so, he is making a mockery of the country in the eyes of the world. Granted, he won the election. However, he won his office promising to release his taxes and remove himself from conflicts of interest between his office and his businesses. Since he hasn't taken either of these steps voluntarily, it is past time to do it for him. At like a truculent child, be treated like one.
This is the first step towards impeaching Trump should he refuse to do what all past Presidents have done. If he does release the info, then we will at least have clarity on where his conflicts lie. Win-Win.
To have faith in our democracy, we should have some basic requirements of a president no matter which party they come from. This should be a bipartisan bill. We need to be able to have a baseline of trust that our elected officials are acting in our best interest. Please help make this bill a bipartisan effort and move it along.
The fact that the President refuses to divest from his properties in the United States and around the world to be placed into a blind trust violates the emoluments clause. It also means he'll personally profit off the Presidency. That shouldn't happen!
