Modernizing Federal Housing Programs for Low-Income Families

Argument in favor

The federal government’s housing programs help many Americans, but the archaic bureaucracies that operate them need to be modernized to operate more efficiently and avoid the waste of tax dollars.

It isn't possible to make the necessary changes AND to give adequate funding so the changes both save currently wasted $$$ and make it possible to include a larger group of citizens who cannot afford housing? I suppose, given how feckless Congress has proved itself to be, it is not possible. Get it together and fix this! Lack of affordable housing destroys families and, with it, the economic future of the US. We are wedded to the concept of American exceptionalism and yet we have come to define it as pushing the entire country back to the 1900's by imposing punitive policies on a large portion of what as once the middle class. How's that working for you?

Argument opposed

While this bill may have some necessary reforms, on balance it makes too many changes to these federal housing programs without giving the agencies that administer them additional resources.

No fed housing. We need to find these people jobs. They can find there housing. If we must have federal housing, all working age recipient must have to do some sort work on keep the "projects" livable with cleaning, painting, lawn care and security. Keep out multiple families living in single units.

Stop with the handouts. Unfair to the middle class, who ultimately pay for all of it.

Congress must in invest as much money as possible to gradually alleviate our infrastructure. More imperatives, our nation must invest it's money in establishing an increase amount in AMERICAN JOBS so that all Americans have the abilities to access the proper necessities they desperately need. Instead of our Washington democratic-bureaucrats investing their money in keeping their large donors in and contributing to bills that demonize and devalue American values, they should realize that there are fighting citizens that are desperate for just a minimum wage paying jobs to provide themselves with future occupational and educational opportunities. Possibly affordable housing as well. Unless our current tax system is alleviated and stabilized we not have the ability to support the poverty portion which consist of millions with houses until we start paying off debt, stabilizing our tax code system, and then to come in the future possibly establishing federal housing for families. So in other words, I Am neutral with this bill.

We are tired of a Congress that spends taxpayers' money so they get rich instead of spending it on the maintenance of the real needs of the people. Got it!!!

the government long ago decided that it was in the public interest for people of varying economic means to be able to live in the same region, partially for stability and partially because the alternative would require longer and longer commutes for service industry workers to make it to their jobs, to the point where it might border on inhumane in today's housing climate. These programs freeze the inflation of land on certain plots, and more investment now means more savings in the future (much like transit). Given that this decision has been made, the government needs to keep its promise rather that continue to let these buildings crumble and deteriorate with sub-par funding. Doing this more efficiently and effectively is the goal.

In a country this rich no one should be homeless. Salt Lake City has done wonderful things with the homelessness problem, look it up.

As an educator I've made numerous home visits to section 8 housing. It breaks my heart that my students live in conditions that are often unsafe! Everyone deserves a safe home to live in, why would we not want to support that!

While I don't think this bill goes far enough in the changes made to Federal Housing, I do appreciate the effort to reduce wasted tax dollars. I also appreciate the changes made in an effort to give Veterans better access to housing.

Public Housing. What a joke. Clinton and Greenspan started that with everyone should have a home, even if you don't qualify. If a city provides a Section 8 Housing Program, all they need is an application list and computers.
