Letting these programs lapse would make it more difficult for students to get the loans necessary to further their education. Extending them is a bipartisan solution.

I understand that there could be better grants and loan programs that could possibly be more effective and be a smaller burden on taxpayers. But until such a grant or program is actually realized, college students like my self shouldn't be left out to dry. Allow us to continue our education while you make up your mind on what program is the "best."
Argument opposed
There are other federal student loan programs that wouldn’t be affected by allowing the Perkins Program to lapse. Plus, there are always private loans.

When I went to college back in the 1960s, few students had loans and tuition was affordable. The more money kids can borrow, the more college tends to cost. Let's work toward once again being able to pay as you go. Tuition is much higher than it needs to be now.

Education is a right !! These are loans I'm using for school for my medical degree and my political science degree. Let's make it easier for more children to go to school !

Everyone should be able to go to college if they are academic able regardless of financial situation
Student loans are a major issue for numerous Americans. It makes perfect sense to encourage continuous education to invigorate the future economy.
As a recent college graduate I know that unfortunately student loans are often the only way to make college financially feasible. Take away these programs and many students who should be going to college won't be able to.
Perkins is unneeded families can use PLUS loans and sub/unsub loans.
no, bernie sanders, higher education is not a right. government intervention blatantly ruined the university. federal funding led to price gouging. government regulations and policies (FAFSA, affirmative action) led to competitive and frankly unreasonable applicant costs for those who don't qualify (or, less-PC: those whose parents made very good choices to gain their success and that of their children).......when you make college available to everyone, you actually increase the competition for the good schools (unless you're an affirmative action beneficiary) while decreasing the quality of schools across the board. what we're seeing on college campuses nowadays--a severe lack of brains and maturity if we're being honest--is not a coincidence. we have turned previously-respected universities into student-run daycares and because the FEDS allowed universities to become so greedy, their hands are tied. no one respects the institution. they don't even respect themselves! they cower to entitled students' every demand. THIS CAN ALL BE TRACED BACK TO FEDERAL AID MEDDLING IN THE FREE MARKET. thank god bernie did not become president. already, i pay out of pocket tuition for the government's grave error AND i pay for others to go to the same schools for next to nothing on my tax dollars. THAT IS TEXTBOOK SOCIALISM. if i was on board with socialism, i wouldn't have gone to college at all. i'd let the unqualified, coddled masses do all the work while i collected all THEIR tax dollars :)
Private loans with high interest rates are not a possibility for most American students. The Perkins loan, allows for students to further their education while limiting the financial burden new graduates face.
This program helped me pay for my education. It is important to keep options available for students who want to make an investment in their future!
Students who have the mental faculties to attend college, but lack the monetary means should be supported by the government.
All I can say is college students need all the help they can get. Extending Perkins loans would be wonderful. Education is always a worthy investment and we should continue to help our students achieve that endeavor.
College tuitions are skyrocketing far faster than inflation because of the ease students obtain loans.
