Should Migrants Apprehended at the Southern Border Receive Standardized Medical Screenings?

Argument in favor

Inadequate medical screening procedures at the southern border have contributed to migrants’ deaths, including those of children. Screening migrants within a reasonable timeframe after their initial apprehension would help ensure that those with medical needs are properly attended to.

Do we check inmates and POWs?? Yes? Then we must treat these PEOPLE with at minimum the same standards we use for ALL HUMANS.

It is unethical, immoral and possibly illegal to not have livable standards and standards for care of people our government chooses to detain. And, that includes medical screening and treatment. Good for everyone involved- both us and them.

I think this is a sound and ethical idea. In order for me to become a resident of Canada I must pass a physical. True in many other countries as well. This is especially important since we have chosen to detain people in close quarters and in unsanitary conditions. We owe it to them to give them the physical they need in order to insure formally healthy people do not now have an illness which requires treatment.

Argument opposed

DHS & CBP already requested additional funding to expand medical screening for migrants in its care and Congress has already appropriated additional money for this purpose in an emergency funding package from June 30, 2019.

This is why we have a crisis at the border. Stop giving away free stuff. Close the border and let Mexico take care of these people, the crisis will end quickly.

Ok ladies and gentlemen! You CANNOT become a citizen of Canada by ILLEGALLY crossing the Canadian border or any border for that matter. Many countries will “end you” for attempting to cross borders illegally. So if you are asking me to spend my tax money on someone ILLEGALLY crossing the U.S. border my answer is NO. You may however ask me to spend my tax money on medical care for someone LEGALLY crossing the U.S. border and my answer is yes. Stop comparing apples to oranges, Stop comparing LEGAL border crossing examples to ILLEGAL border crossings. 👎🏻 HR-3525 the U.S. Border Patrol Medical Screening Standards Act 👎🏻 This bill to me, appears to be just another Democratic attempt in the prolonging migrants retention, in the USA 🇺🇸. I stand opposed to House Bill HR-3525 AKA the U.S. Border Patrol Medical Screening Standards Act which would require standardized processes and training to ensure consistent medical screenings for individuals apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border within 12 hours of their initial stop. These medical screenings would cover medical history, current medical complaints, current medications, and more. This bill would also provide law enforcement and the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) staff with requested training to improve the quality of care given to migrants and equip officers with additional resources to address medical situations.  DHS & CBP has already requested additional funding to expand medical screening for migrants in its care and Congress has already appropriated additional money for this purpose in an emergency funding package from June 30, 2019. I think the government should provide healthcare for the people who have walked 2,000 miles. Especially for the children who become ill much faster than adults. We are not only responsible to the migrants but to our own citizens. If the migrants are sick God only knows what kind of virus they are carrying.

Yes! If someone is sick and we put them in the same area as someone who is healthy, it is considering a risk environment. Therefore not providing them a safe shelter. How is this not being done? We take care of sick people, not make more sick!

Definitely. There needs to be some sort of way to ensure the safety of migrants as they reach the border once they come under US. If a migrant is going to be in custody there needs to be some way in order to make sure that there medical requirements are met in order to prevent them joining the other handful who have died due to unknown prior conditions or negligence to their conditions.

Absolutely they should receive medical screenings. And, care, as needed. As I’ve said before, they’re people. Love them or hate them, they’re people. Not that we should hate them to begin with. It’s said that the character of a person or society is revealed in how they treat their enemies. These people aren’t even, generally speaking, our enemies. Our nation’s character has been revealed to be of low quality and we should all be sick with what’s going on at these sites.

Lauren, This ,of course,is unnecessary newbie proposed legislation. It is simply unnecessary. Your first duty is to serve the interests American people. That is what your oath means under our Constitution. You must read the oath and apply this test to every action you take as a member of the People’s House. Then, withdraw this bill.

Nope. Quarantine them to protect the innocent and send their scofflaw @sses right back where they came from. They can sponge off the social services of their native communities.

    A. They are not migrants. B. They are not immigrants. They are an invading horde of criminals that need to be repelled from OUR border or we will sink, cease to exist if you will. We must retain the integrity of MY COUNTRY or we will soon be just like the hell holes they came from and I along with millions of others will not let that happen. MY PRESIDENT is doing just that and he will continue that in his second term. None of these CRIMINALS should be able to stay no matter what they claim, they all broke the law by entering MY COUNTRY ILLEGALLY THAT MAKES THEM CRIMINALS. If you want to enter MY COUNTRY do it right, stay in you own country or stop at the first country you get to, not going thru 8 or 9 countries as before you get here. Fill the paperwork and wait just like millions of others have done for the last 200 years!! They should not be here, plain and simple

If it's legal, moral and ethical do it. At the very least we need to know if the detainee poses a danger to our agents other detainees.
