The penalty for female genitalia mutilation should be castration.

In my opinion 15 years is too short of a term. The girls that have this done to them have to live with it for the rest of their lives; so maybe we should make the people who do it have to live with their mistake for the rest of their lives.

Penalty for female genital mutilation should be life, that is how long it is going to be for that girl. What is sad is women vote for people that abuses women? Also why do people vote for a Pedifile and abuser in general? The democrats condemned and ask for resignation of their members. The republicans party believes the men? They need to read and see Time’s person of the year “Silence Breakers”!

The penalty should be increased from 5 to 50 years.

Can we please stop comparing FGM to circumcision? Circumcision isn’t necessary, however it’s nothing compared to the horrific trauma these young girls face. Boys are babies when they’re circumcised and won’t remember the experience, whereas these girls will never be able to forget that kind of horror.

Life!!! Women's lives are forever changed and parts of them (physically and otherwise) are lost FOR NO SOUND REASON.

I sadly vote for a minimum of 15 years. But honestly I think that there needs to be an attempt at education so that this cultural practice can be questioned by the culture itself. There needs to be much more reporting on what happens to girls who undergo this procedure. Do all the men in this culture really understand that this is basically castration? That it causes horrifically painful complications? In any human culture heinous cultural practices are supported by a huge amount of denial. How can we help to break the denial? How can we really get the men (and women) to see and understand what is truly happening here? It is human nature to be in a lot of denial about a cultural practice. It would be wonderful to hear more men in the culture speak out about this. There are always many men no matter how patriarchal the culture that love women and that understand that any attack on a woman’s humanity is equally an attack on their own. No matter what, I choose to believe in the inherent goodness within each human being. Punishment only goes so far and sadly it often creates even more resistance to what it is trying to change.

Yes. This is an act taken against minors who have no choice in the matter. I’m not certain that 15 years is adequate. Genital mutilation is permanent, painful, has a permanent effect on sexual fulfillment and may be life threatening in some cases. How would men like those same parts cut away, often without anesthesia, then live their life’s with the consequences of their guardian’s decision? No adults choice should permanently deny a minor’s right to make such a decision for themselves once they reach the age of majority. This is cruelty.
