The Dept. of the Interior’s decision not to affirm the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe’s reservation’s status has thrown the tribe into turmoil and caused economic hardship. Affirming the tribe’s reservation will allow the Mashpee to move forward with their development plans for the tribe’s rightful lands, including a $1 billion casino in Taunton, Massachusetts.
The Mashpee Wampanoag’s plan to build a $1 billion casino on its reservation will disrupt both the town of Taunton, Massachusetts, where the casino would be located, and neighboring Rhode Island, which could lose millions in gambling revenue. Additionally, the Mashpee Wampanoag don’t have a legal right to request a land into trust conversion based on existing federal law.
