Sarah and Grant’s Law: Cutting Grant Funding for Sanctuary States & Cities

Argument in favor

States and cities that adopt sanctuary policies and refuse to honor federal requests to detain criminal unauthorized immigrants shouldn’t receive federal law enforcement grants.

If we are not a nation of laws - then its the beginning of anarchy. Every nation on each has laws on immigration and we should respect their laws - and they should respect our laws as a sovereign nation.

The federal government is supposed to regulate interstate commerce and provide for the common defense and that's about it. We shouldn't be giving huge sums of money to states in the first place as Jefferson often advised against and we certainly shouldn't be giving said funding to states that blatantly disregard federal law.

Doesn't go far enough the people responsible for the so called Sanctuary Cities/States need to be arrested for aiding and abetting criminals. These people made themselves criminals when they chose illegals over the citizens that voted for them. They are just as guilty for every crime committed by an illegal in their city/state as the illegal him/herself. If an illegal kills someone the people who turned the city/state into a sanctuary is guilty of murder as well.

Argument opposed

The federal government should give states law enforcement grants and let them set their own priorities. Conditioning grants on the enforcement of immigration law may be unconstitutional.

With # 45 doing everything possible to establish a dictatorship including attacking the free press, free speech, alienating democracies while cozying up to brutal dictatorships. This vicious idea is another step toward the dictatorship of the US and removes another freedom. All but Native Americans are immigrants. We need the hard work, the integrity, the patriotism, and the ambition of all who are immigrants. Documentation is only papers. Human beings are much more important than papers. Please vote no on this dangerous and mean bill.

This bill appears to take measures and lay the foundation for an authoritarian "police state" in the US. Grants for law enforcement funding should not be withheld and a "deportation force” should not be used to storm and forcibly enter homes, churches, schools and businesses to round-up and detain undocumented immigrants. Although immigration control is necessay, a police state is not the answer.

This is what a dictatorship looks like. This bill if passed will be struck down as being unconstitutional no matter who sits on the Supreme Court. It would create an us versus them relationship with law enforcement and people they depend on to report crime and support them not to mention putting policeman's lives at risk for lack of that very support.

This bill would undermine public safety and would not allow for law enforcements to protect an individuals' rights due to supremacy. It's in violation of due process and the 4th and 10th amendment of the constitution.

This bill is a move toward an authoritarian police state that would force local jurisdictions to follow federal guidelines concerning immigration/sanctuary cities. It is a move to force public safety officers (any public employees of a local jurisdiction) to enforce and abide by laws enforces by the Department of Homeland Security. It will strip away any self determination for localities within their jurisdiction for those issues involving immigration and enforcement. The Republicans cannot have it both ways, authoritarian government where they want to force compliance and local authority where they don't want oversight. Either the Federal laws trump local law or local law trump's Federal. They must choose.

There are multiple studies that show sanctuary cities are actually safer. Immigrants also make up a large part of the workforce and provide vital contributions to our economy. Let states and cities enforce their own policies. This is an overreach and tends towards a police state. It is fueled by the reprehensible anti-immigrant sentiment sweeping the nation.

Fear of deportation has ALREADY caused illegal immigrants to fail to report crimes committed against them such as sexual assault. Fighting against sanctuary cities makes these cities unsafe. Republicans value small government. Act like it. Vote against this bill.

Sanctuary cities and states are violating federal law. Therefore no federal funding until they are in compliance.

These states have stood up for the constitution, and what is morally right. Also, at least one of these states (California) provides more money to the US than it takes in funding. Voting to cut support to these states would cause more financial harm to the US than it would solve problems, because let's face it, the problem is banning people from entering a country of immigrants based on religion is the problem. Make no mistake, anyone supporting this bill will not be in office come the end of their term.

Yes! Why should Americans pay for illegals healthcare, college etc. These sanctuary cities are harboring criminals for one thing. We need a Wall and if these so called liberal fascist sanctuary cities protect illegals, all of their city funds should be halted and used toward the Wall.
