Making the Bison America’s National Mammal

Argument in favor

The bison has played an important role in American history since the country’s founding, and has been saved from near-extinction. Designating the bison as the national mammal will ensure that legacy continues on for future generations.

We sure killed enough of them- we should do something to remember them in a positive light

The bison has played a huge role in American history even in pre-colonial times which is more than the eagle has.obviously this is just symbolic legislation but it surely deserves more recognition than the bald eagle.

Yes on the outside this is trivial. But at least it's something we can fairly overwhelmingly agree upon!

Argument opposed

Designating the bison as the national mammal is an empty gesture that carries no weight in actual policy decisions. The U.S. already has a national animal — the bald eagle — so a national mammal is unnecessary.

This is a kind of random, overly specific gesture that carries no actual weight. Focus on something important, Congress.

The bald Eagle Currently displays an exemplification of peace when it's currently facing the olive branch. In other words, The bald eagle is extremely symbolic for our society because it's point of direction promotes peace and not war. Although, when the eagle is facing towards the arrow our nation would be in war.In addition, a secondary reason why the eagle is significant for our nations visual perspectives and history was because the original Continental Congress of 1774. This governmental group was originally consisted and governed by George Washington as well. So no one on the face of our nation should believe it's right to reject a peaceful and patriotic exemplification of our nation that our founding fathers established. Our founding fathers do not get enough credit of how they have truly impacted our society today especially with our significant symbolizations, for instance for establishing our eagle and greatly justifying it.

STOP THIS UNNECESSARY DILATORY BEHAVIOR! Do the jobs we elected you to do -- address the shrinking income of the middle class, not jobs. It's your job to determine solutions, do it!

Giving this great animal its rightful place as a symbol of the United States is a step in the direction of atoning for its decimation in the nineteenth century

Why is Congress wasting its time on stuff like this, when there are so many more pressing issues facing this nation?! This is ridiculous, IMO.

We next to slaughtered their species, we reduced their ocean-like herds to small bands fighting for survival. They represent the fighting spirit of America and deserve such an honor to serve as our national mammal.

For those who say "There are more important issues," when it comes to animal rights and other topics, you need to learn respect for animal lives as well as our Earth. We are the caretakers of this Earth; therefore, we should learn to RESPECT what was graciously given to us by God.

This stuff is least of our worries. Seriously? This is more important than gays being thrown off rooftops, or otherwise murdered by Muslims? This is more important than human babies being murdered in the womb for spare parts? The world is going to hell in a hand basket and people are worried about what should be the 'National Animal'?

To honor the continent as it was before settler-colonials invaded; also to give homage to the indigenous peoples and nonhuman animals of this land.

What happened to the bison and the Native's way of life during the period of European settlement in North America was unjust and unfair in many ways. The bison should be honored due to the centuries of a sustained way of life it gave Natives of North America before European arrival.
