Should the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site be Expanded and Renamed?

Argument in favor

Expanding the national historic site that honors MLK’s legacy to include the original headquarters of the civil rights organization he co-founded adds value to the park.

For everyone worried about price and costs, don't. This is a great idea. Expanding and renaming hurts no one, costs no more than we're already spending, and is a great honor for a man who deserves it (though I wish more civil right leaders got recognition)

Because the park should be expanded- I wish the name would also honor the many other powerful forces in the civil rights movement such as Malcolm x and the black panthers

Argument opposed

Rather than incorporating it into the MLK national historic site, perhaps the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s original headquarters should receive their own national recognition.

What the heck for?! We've become a nation of hero-worshippers, instead of GOD-WORSHIPPERS, and Martin Luther King, Jr., himself, wouldn't approve of that! Hero-worshipping is IDOLATRY!

No cost to the taxpayer, and i have also visited said memorial in Atlanta. It could definitely use the renovation and expansion to truly honor a great individual while also highlighting an organization that has done wonders for the continuing civil rights movement

Expanding it - sure. Renaming it - no way. What civil rights leader deserves it more than MLK?

People would be more apt to visit the site if it were a part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial arena. If it didn't fall under that umbrella of a famous name, people would be unsure of visiting, particularly if they had not done much research on the subject. Additionally, at a cost of $0, this could do wonders for education on the subject in this country as well as assisting the furthering of civil rights beyond the idea of figureheads.

Assuming the private owners of the building consent to this expansion, MLK's legacy should include the organization he co-founded considering it is within the same premises.

I think it's a great idea. Also, for those concerned about the name, please read things before you vote and comment, across the board! The only part of the name that will change is the designation part - *National Monument* he deserves this, and America needs to be reminded of our tumultuous racist past (and present) especially now.

My children and I visited it last summer and I was completely emotionally moved. I think it is beautiful and the artist(s) expressed hope, love, and peace.

We have several civil rights leaders that deserve recognition. I support preserving our baby steps toward equitable lives but we have a lot to do. So, yes and do more please.
