Should The Department of Veterans’ Affairs Be Able To Take Back Employee Bonuses?

Argument in favor

Bonuses should go to people that do their jobs well. Many executives in the VA organization have done their jobs poorly and still got bonuses. It is unfair to the taxpayers and those employees need to fork the money over.

Is a bonus not a reward for a job well done?

Bonuses!?! They don't have the funding to appropriately take care of the veterans.

When veterans die due to negligence, administrators should not receive bonuses

Argument opposed

This bill gives the Secretary of Veterans’ Affairs gives the ability to take away bonuses willy-nilly. While taking away bonuses may be appropriate in the case of the recent VA scandals, it should be a rare occurrence. This bill authorizes too much power.

When you 'give' something it is no longer 'yours' to take back. Bonuses should be limited to performance well above expectations and be justified by a board before given in the first place.

No, people that are bad at their jobs shouldn't receive bonuses. But this bill doesn't put enough of a check on the ability to take them back.

You shouldn't take it if it was already given. How about we make it so they can fire people who don't deserve the job.

All bonuses should be taken back. All got paid for doing the job they were hired to do. This isn't the private sector. NO BONUSES for government employees. Don't like it QUIT!

What a mess. This is so wrong on so many levels. Bonuses should be awarded to those who have demonstrated performance above & beyond. Regular compensation is for a job well done. In this case, it makes sense to rectify the wrong doing.

Yes! This department is as corrupt as the FDA and the EPA. This bunch of self serving snakes pocket bonuses while their dysfunctional, corrupt cohorts allow veterans to die while waiting or being denied medical help. Take back every dime these amoral scum have rewarded themselves with.

I would love to have seen something like this happen to Wall Street during the housing crisis. Making sure that government officials are held responsible for their actions is vital to maintaining the strength of the people.

The motivation for good performance should be the desire to serve Veterans, not cash awards. It is the awards that drive the dishonest reporting of accomplishments by upper level managers, such as reducing wait times for appointments. I think we should eliminate all cash awards for government employees.

You politicians reward yourselves simply for being able to get out of bed in the morning. You do the same with federal bureaucrats. Who in the private sector gets rewarded for doing bad work? I can only surmise that you are politicians simply because you would never survive in a real job. Nobody, ESPECIALLY IN GOVERNMENT, should get rewarded with US CITIZENS' money for doing a lousy job. And they should not only NOT get bonuses to begin with, they should be fired when they do a bad job at work.

I am against giving bonuses in government jobs. They are paid better than the private sector and have better job security. It used to be considered an honor and a sacrifice to serve your government. Government departments are bloated with money and waste. It's our money!
