Should U.S. Elections Have Paper Ballots & Improved Security Against Hacking?

Argument in favor

There’s a real risk that Russia, and perhaps others, will attempt to influence the upcoming 2020 elections using similar tactics to those displayed in 2016. Updating state election infrastructure to protect against hacking and implementing paper ballots for better election auditability will help ensure that future elections are protected against foreign meddling.

I’d advocate that all voting machines be banned and only a paper ballot used but barring that, there must be a paper receipt to insure the accuracy of every vote. To not have a back up system like this only invites Russia and other foreign actors to continue their interference in our elections.

The manipulation of voting by gerrymandering and suppression should be illegal. The GOP

Argument opposed

This bill’s partisan nature — along with Sen. McConnell’s opposition to it and House Democrats’ other electoral reforms — means it’s unlikely to become law. Rather than wasting its time on legislation that won’t become law, Congress should spend its time coming to a bipartisan agreement on election security ahead of the 2020 federal elections.

I'm against the bill, and agreeing with Sen. McConnell that this is federal overreach. While I wholeheartedly agree that paper ballots are the safest, and it's been Republicans who've been pushing that, this is a state issue.

So we went to electronic ballots in order to avoid the "handing chad" issues from the 2000 elections, and now we want to go back to paper ballots to avoid hacking. We just can't win!

Absolutely! Until such time we have a blockchain-based system, paper is the way to go. In-person, with valid ID in hand.

Yes and do away with the Electoral College, it does not support the people’s choices

Yes, but the Russians and the Republicans will just find a way around the protections. I think we are watching both of these groups murder our democracy.

AVR, Paper Ballots, and Vote-by-mail. Literally the most secure system. Unhackable, Verified, Accessible to voters, inaccessible otherwise. Do it.

Yes, we need improved voting security. I think the federal government should task some our cyber security folks to issues guidelines for protecting votes and vote counting against hacking or tampering and then publicly issue an periodic report grading each states voting practices. Let their people know and push for action. There are ways of securely building redundancies in the data collected from distributed sources which would flag local/regional discrepancies indicating a security breech. Security can be achieved without the need for paper ballots and suspect practices for counting them; "hanging chads"

So the question is should we do what we can to secure our elections?!?! Seriously?!?! Even if there wasn't substantial evidence showing internal and external people, organizations, politicians & governments actively trying to influence amd or tamper with our elections on every level, which there is, it would still be wise to do what we can to secure our elections. Only those interested in a fair and equitable Democracy for the people, would care about secure elections. Those that don't risk being so overwhelmingly voted out that they lose even with by a rigged system.

Yes. Paper hand marked ballots. We need election security. Paper hand marked ballots. No gerrymandering. Much work to be done. Protect our elections. Also restrictions on social media around elections is necessary.

Well that's a big fat DUH. Common sense....but...logical, therefore, will not happen. Machines are not good for everything. Sometimes the old ways are best. This is one of those times.

It’s more important that our elections be protected from politicians and any vendors that can steal elections through electronic voting machines! All ballots should be on paper, not digital! That’s the only way to ensure that our votes are secure!

Hopefully it would be harder to hack paper ballots with effective supervision. Many Americans, like me believe Trump is betting on his Russian allies to hand him the election.

There should be heightened security for both methods of voting. Does everyone have amnesia? Paper ballots were subject to tampering as well. Hell, some ballot boxes and mailed ballots went completely missing. Remember Florida with Dubya? This is not a paper/digital issue, but a security issue. Up the security all-around. My millennial jab: Old! Why can't we vote from our phones? Why don't we have IDs (Individual Devices) yet!? The future is now, let's start acting like it!

It’s a shame that we have to do paper ballots, but it must be done. Otherwise, the hacking will be repeated. I never want to go through another voting process that will bring Trump, or any other monster, into the White House.
